• IICA’s technical cooperation, efficient management of resources and consolidation of partnerships have been recognized, with new funding secured, including:

o 35m Euro for a Caribbean regional project in agritourism under the 11th EDF with CTA;

o US$20,000 in funding from Caribbean Export for the participation of eight regional young agri-preneurs in CWA 2018 marketplace. Partners included the FAO, EU Delegation, Caribbean Development Bank, UWI, UNDP, ECDPG (Eastern Caribbean Development Partners Group); CARICOM Development Fund: Compete Caribbean, IDB, COLEACP, OAS, CUSO, Canadian Government and the Embassy of Argentina; and

o Bds $100,000 for Youth Farm 2018 with IICA, TVET Council, FAO, NZ High Commission and WUSC PROPEL.

• The capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to breed high quality Barbados Blackbelly Sheep and improve their nutrition was enhanced through several actions, including the strengthening of staff skills and infrastructure at the Greenland Livestock Research Station under a New Zeland-funded project; a feed mill purchased; AI laboratory retrofitted; Ministry technicians supported for study tour to Jamaica to observe best practices in AI laboratory management; and regional training workshop in “Modern Small Ruminant Management”. In addition, the capacity of the Ministry in Aquaculture and Apiculture was improved through training of two technical officers, and the installation of demonstration/training facilities for aquaculture at St. George Secondary School.

• Trade linkages between the agrifood and tourism sectors was enhanced in Barbados through partnership with the chefs and students of the Hospitality Institute to host the 14th Annual Healthy Snack Seminars and Plantation Breakfast at Agrofest, Barbados, and at the regional level through support to the Caribbean Culinary Alliance in the development of a 2-year Strategic Plan. Through funding from CTA, IICA delivered training in Agrotourism and Food Safety in Foodservice in Belize to their Hotel and Culinary Associations and participated in the planning of agritourism policy workshops in Jamaica, Suriname, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada and Barbados.

• The availability of qualified young farmers to support the agrifood sector in Barbados has been enhanced through the training and certification of thirty students from 13

participating secondary schools under the IICA Youth Farm 2018 programme. 10 students received NVQ certification in Crop Production Level 1, 12 were certified in Livestock Rearing Level 1, and 8 received CVQ certification in Aquaculture Grow Out Operations. The students also acquired soft skills including teamwork, professional etiquette, communication skills, and technical skills in sustainable farming.

• The Institute facilitated the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) by hosting high-level meetings with government officials, agency heads and ambassadors and by participating in CWA technical workshops; hosting of an Accountability Seminar; publication of a significant number of printed and social media releases, including Fb page for the Youth Farm; and a presentation on Food Fraud at the CARIRI Food Fraud Conference in Trinidad & Tobago.
