Significant Achievements 2020

• The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) assumed responsibility for the operational management of the project execution unit of two major projects (SU-L1020 and SU-L1052) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, funded under the IDB-LVV Agricultural Competitiveness Program and the Sustainable Agricul-tural Productivity Program. The projects were designed to increase the competitiveness of the agriculture sec-tor, by improving animal health, plant health and food safety, as well as agricultural research and technology transfer services. The aim was also to boost agricultural productivity in Suriname through infrastructural in-vestments and Irrigation and Drainage (I&D) system management, and by enhancing the quality of available agricultural statistics.

• IICA Suriname assisted seven producer, rural women and youth organizations with a total membership of four hundred and fifty individuals. Drawing on resources from the Institute’s Special COVID-19 Fund for the Caribbean Region—aimed at strengthening the food and nutrition security of rural communities neg-atively impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic—IICA distributed agricultural inputs, small agricultural tools and equipment.

• A composting facility was established for the Suriname Agriculture Forum for Youth (SURAFY), to assist in the ca-pacity building of members and other interested stakeholders in biofertilizer production, while also boosting productivity and promoting soil health and environmental conservation. • In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture,

Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, IICA supported the establishment of a cassava plantation, on behalf of the Suriname Network of Rural Women Producers (SUNRWP). The cassava producers were provided with clean planting material, utilizing improved varieties from the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). The Institute also lent technical assistance to im-plement a pilot walk-in solar dryer project for members of the SUNRWP and Wi Uma Fu Sranan involved in agroprocessing. The unit will facilitate improved quality, standardization and enhanced capacity in the preparation of raw materials for agroprocessed products. • IICA’s capabilities to support coconut field manage-ment in Suriname were increased through a training intervention, financed by the Government of Mexico and the Scientific Investigation Center of Yucatan (CICY), and undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries.
