Renting a House

Dans le document DARI BASIC COURSE (Page 92-97)

Vocabulary: Related to real estate: houses, rooms, amenities, rent

Grammar: Passive voice; compound sentences; relative clauses

Functions: Find out details about rental properties.

Skills: Understand numbers in context.

Situation: An employee of the American embassy talks with a real estate agent about a suitable place for a diplomat who will arrive soon.

Grammar Notes Compound sentences

The most basic sentence type is called simple. A simple sentence is made up of only one clause. In other words, a simple sentence has only one verb. Example:

.مدﺮﮐ ﮓﻧر زوﺮﻳد ار باﻮﺧ قﺎﺗا ﻦﻳا ﻦﻣ ‘I painted this bedroom yesterday.’

We can make more interesting sentences with two or more clauses that are connected by a conjunction, such as و ‘and,’ ﯽﻟو,ﺮﮕﻣ, ﺎﻣا ‘but,’ ﻪﮐ ‘that /who /which,’ ﺎﻳ ‘or,’ etc. Such sentences are called compound sentences. Note the shaded conjunctions and the

underlined verbs in the following examples:

.ﺪﻨﮑﻴﻣ نﻮﻔﻠﻴﺗ تﻼﻣﺎﻌﻣ ﯼﺎﻤﻨهر ﺮﺘﻓد ﮏﻳ ﻪﺑ و ﺪﻧاﻮﺨﻴﻣ ار ﯽﻳاﺮﮐ ﯼﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ نﻼﻋاوا

‘He/She reads the advertisement of rental houses and calls a real estate office.’

.ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﻩداد نﺎﻤﺘﺧﺎﺳﺮﻴﻴﻐﺗﺮﺧاوا ﻦﻳارد ﯽﻟو ﺖﺴﻴﻧ ﻮﻧ ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﻦﻳا

‘This house is not new but it has been remodeled recently.’

.ﺖﺳاﺮﺗﺪﻨﻠﺑﺮﺗﻮﻧوﺮﺘﮔرﺰﺑ ﯼﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ءﻪﻳاﺮﮐ ﻪﮐ ١ﻩﺪﺷ ﻪﺘﺷﻮﻧ ﻪﻣﺎﻧزوررد

‘It has been written in the newspaper that the rent for bigger and newer houses is higher.’

.ﺪﻴﻨﮐ نﻮﻔﻠﻴﺗ ﺎﻬﻧﺁ ﻪﺑ ﺎﻳ ﺪﻳوﺮﺑ تﻼﻣﺎﻌﻣ ﯼﺎﻤﻨهرﺮﺘﻓد ﻪﺑ ًﺎﻔﻄﻟ

‘Please go to the real estate office or call them.’

1 The verb ﻩﺪﺷ ﻪﺘﺷﻮﻧ ‘has been written’ is the present perfect tense of the verb ﻦﺘﺷﻮﻧ ‘to write’ in the passive

Passive voice

In grammar, the relationship between the subject and the verb is called voice. In the active voice, the subject performs the action of the verb. In the passive voice, the subject is acted upon or done to.

Let’s look at the statement ‘They painted the house.’ It is in the active voice: the subject (they) performed the action (paint.) Compare this statement to ‘The house was painted.’

It is in the passive voice: the subject (house) is acted upon and does not perform the action (paint.) In the passive voice, the verb indicates what the subject undergoes, not what it does.

In Dari, the passive voice is mostly constructed with the help of the auxiliary verb نﺪﺷ

‘to become.’ Three different forms are shown below:

Infinitive Present stem Past stem

نﺪﺷ ﻮﺷ ﺪﺷ

Let’s look at the conjugation of the verb نﺪﺷ in various tenses:

Present tense ﻦﻣ

مﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘I become’

ﻮﺗ

ﯼﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘You become’

وا

دﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘He/She/It becomes’

ﺎﻣ

ﻢﻳﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘We become’

ﺎﻤﺷ

ﺪﻳﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘You become’

ﺎﻬﻧﺁ

ﺪﻧﻮﺸﻴﻣ ‘They become’

Past tense

ﯼﺪﺷﻮﺗ ‘You became’

ﺪﺷوا ‘He/She/It became’

ﻢﻳﺪﺷ ﺎﻣ ‘We became’

ﺪﻳﺪﺷ ﺎﻤﺷ ‘You became’

ﺪﻧﺪﺷ ﺎﻬﻧﺁ ‘They became’

Future tense

ﺪﺷ ﻢهاﻮﺧ ﻦﻣ ‘I will become’

ﺪﺷ ﯽهاﻮﺧﻮﺗ ‘You will become’

ﺪﺷ ﺪهاﻮﺧوا ‘He/She/It will become’

ﺪﺷ ﻢﻴهاﻮﺧ ﺎﻣ ‘We will become’

ﺪﺷ ﺪﻴهاﻮﺧ ﺎﻤﺷ ‘You will become’

ﺪﺷ ﺪﻨهاﻮﺧ ﺎﻬﻧﺁ ‘They will become’

Present perfect tense

ما ﻩﺪﺷ ﻦﻣ ‘I have become’

ﯼا ﻩﺪﺷﻮﺗ ‘You have become’

ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﺷوا ‘He/She/It has become’

ﻢﻳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﺎﻣ ‘We have become’

ﺪﻳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﺎﻤﺷ ‘You have become’

ﺪﻧا ﻩﺪﺷ ﺎﻬﻧﺁ ‘They have become’

We construct the passive voice of simple verbs

those having a one-word infinitive

with the help of the following formula:

a) Simple verbs

Past participle of the verb + Conjugated form of نﺪﺷ ‘to become’

Now confirm your understanding of the formula by identifying the past participles and the conjugated forms of نﺪﺷ ‘to become’ in each of the following examples, while noting the different tenses:

.دﻮﺸﻴﻣ ﻩﺪﻳﺮﺧ ﻮﻧﺮﭽﻴﻧﺮﻓو ﻞﺒﻣ ﻦﻤﻴﺸﻧ قﺎﺗا ﯼاﺮﺑ ‘New furniture is being bought for the living room.’

.دراد گرﺰﺑ ﯽﻠﻳﻮﺣ ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﻦﻳا ﻪﮐ ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﻪﺘﺷﻮﻧ ﻪﻣﺎﻧزوررد ‘It has been written in the

newspaper that this house has a big yard.’

.ﺪﺷ ﺪهاﻮﺧ ﻪﺘﺧوﺮﻓ ﻩﺪﻨﻳﺁ ءﻪﺘﻔه ﺎﻣ ءﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﯼوﺮﺸﻴﭘ ترﺎﻤﻋ ‘The building in front of our house will be sold next week.’

.١ﺪﺷ ﻩداد ﺐﻴﺗﺮﺗﻮﻧ ءﻪﻧﺎﺧرد ﺪﻴهﺎﻧ ﯽﺳوﺮﻋ ‘Nahid’s wedding was held in the new house.’

This is always a past participle and never changes.

This may be present, past, future, or other tenses. Changes occur not only in tense, but also in verb conjugation.

Compound verbs

those consisting of descriptive word(s) added to a verb

follow the same formula, but with one additional component up front:

b) Compound verbs

+ +

For example, the compound verb ندﺮﮐ ‘to build’ consists of the adjective دﺎﺑﺁ دﺎﺑﺁ

‘habitable’ and the verb ندﺮﮐ ‘to do.’ To construct the passive voice of this compound verb, we use the past participle of ندﺮﮐ, which is ﻩدﺮﮐ, with the conjugated form of نﺪﺷ.

Notice the sequence of Adjective + Participle + Conjugated verb:

.ﺪﻧا ﻩﺪﺷ ﻩدﺮﮐ دﺎﺑﺁﺮﺧاوا ﻦﻳارد ﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ نﺁ ‘Those houses have been built recently.’

Now confirm your understanding of the passive voice construction by examining the word order and verb tenses in these examples:

Present tense

.دﻮﺸﻴﻣ ﻩداد ﻪﻳاﺮﮐ ﻪﺑ لﺎﺳ ﮏﻳ تﺪﻣ ﯼاﺮﺑ ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﻦﻳا ‘This house is being rented for a period of one year.’

Present perfect tense

.ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﻩداد نﺎﻤﺘﺧﺎﺳﺮﻴﻴﻐﺗًاﺮﻴﺧا بﺎﻨﺸﺗ ‘The bathroom has been remodeled recently.’

Future tense

.ﺪﺷ ﺪهاﻮﺧ ﻩدﺮﮐ ﮓﻧر ﻩﺪﻨﻳﺁ ءﻪﺘﻔهرد باﻮﺧ قﺎﺗا ‘The bedroom will be painted next week.’

Present subjunctive mood

.دﻮﺷ ﻩدﺮﮐ ﻢﻴﻣﺮﺗ ﻪﺘﻔهﺮﺧﺁزا ﺶﻴﭘ ﺪﻳﺎﺑ ﻪﻧﺎﺧﺰﭙﺷﺁ ‘The kitchen must be repaired before the weekend.’

Future tense negative

.ﺪﺷ ﺪﻨهاﻮﺨﻧ ﻩداد ﻪﻳاﺮﮐ ﻪﺑﺮﭽﻴﻧﺮﻓو ﻞﺒﻣﺎﺑﻮﻧ ﯼﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ‘The new houses will not be rented furnished.’

As you saw in the preceding examples, the verb نﺪﺷ ‘to become,’ depending on the tense in which it was used, changed its form, while the basic structure of the formula remained intact.

Past participle of

the verb Conjugated form of

نﺪ ‘to become’

Descriptive word(s)

Most of the Dari compound verbs contain the helping verb ندﺮﮐ ‘to do,’ such as ﻪﻳاﺮﮐ ندﺮﮐ ‘to rent,’ ندﺮﮐ ‘to find,’ اﺪﻴﭘ ندﺮﮐ ﻢﻴﻣﺮﺗ ‘to repair,’ ندﺮﮐ ﮓﻧر ‘to paint,’ ندﺮﮐ دﺎﺑﺁ‘to build,’ etc. When constructing the passive voice of such compound verbs, we often omit the past participle of ندﺮﮐ, which is ﻩدﺮﮐ, in both formal and conversational Dari, just to make the sentence shorter while its meaning remains unchanged. Look at the shortened versions of previous examples:

.ﺪﻧا ﻩﺪﺷ دﺎﺑﺁﺮﺧاوا ﻦﻳارد ﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ نﺁ ‘Those houses have been built recently.’

.ﺪﺷ ﺪهاﻮﺧ ﮓﻧر ﻩﺪﻨﻳﺁ ءﻪﺘﻔهرد باﻮﺧ قﺎﺗا ‘The bedroom will be painted next week.’

.دﻮﺷ ﻢﻴﻣﺮﺗ ﻪﺘﻔهﺮﺧﺁ زا ﺶﻴﭘ ﺪﻳﺎﺑ ﻪﻧﺎﺧﺰﭙﺷﺁ ‘The kitchen must be repaired before the weekend.’

Relative clauses

A relative clause is a group of words with a subject and a verb that modify a noun or pronoun. Relative clauses begin with the word ﻪﮐ ‘that / who / which’ and describe the preceding noun or pronoun in some detail. Examples:

.دﻮﺑ ﺪهاﻮﺧ ،ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﻴﺳر ﻞﺑﺎﮐ ﻪﺑ ًاﺮﻴﺧا ﻪﮐ ﯽﻳﺎﮑﻳﺮﻣا تﺎﻣﻮﻠﭙﻳد ﮏﻳ ﯼاﺮﺑ ﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﻦﻳا

‘This house is going to be for an American diplomat who has recently arrived in Kabul.

؟ﺪﻳا ﻩﺪﻧاﻮﺧ ،ﺖﺳا ﻩﺪﺷ ﻪﺘﺷﻮﻧ ﻪﻣﺎﻧزوررد ﻪﮐ ار ﯽﻳاﺮﮐ ﯼﺎه ﻪﻧﺎﺧ نﻼﻋا ﺎﻳﺁ

‘Have you read the advertisement for the rental houses that has been written in the newspaper?’

.دﺮﺨﺑﻮﻧ ءﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﮏﻳ ﺪهاﻮﺨﻴﻣ ،ﺪﻨﮑﻴﻣ ﯽﮔﺪﻧر ﯽﻳاﺮﮐ ءﻪﻧﺎﺧ ﮏﻳرد فﺮﻄﻨﻳا ﻪﺑ لﺎﺳ ﺶﺷزا ﻪﮐ ﻢﻳﺮﮐ

rental house for six years, wants to buy a new house.’
