Peu de modules thermoélectriques à base de ces matériaux sont disponibles dans l’état de l’art. Il est plus courant de trouver ces matériaux utilisés sous forme de nanostructures (en superréseaux par exemple), déposés localement pour refroidir une surface [Shakouri 06].
Néanmoins, Infineon a réalisé un module miniaturisé à base de poly-Si et poly-SiGe [Strasser 02].
Les générateurs sont fabriqués par une technologie BiCMOS.
Chaque dispositif compte 59400 jonctions. La taille du module est de 6 mm².
La figure 1.18 montre une image MEB (Microscopie Electronique à Balayage) des plots de poly-Si.
Des dispositifs à base de Si ou de Si70Ge30 ont été réalisés par CVD (Chemical Vapor
Deposition) à partir de précurseurs de disilane (Si2H6) et de germane (GeH4). Le dopage des
matériaux a été réalisé par implantation ionique au bore (type p) ou au phosphore (type n). Les connections électriques sont assurées par des ponts en aluminium.
Les performances obtenues sont un pouvoir thermoélectrique compris entre 100 et 200 mV.K-1,
une résistance totale de 10 MΩ, dont la moitié due aux résistances de contact. Enfin, une

On notera finalement que d’autres modules thermoélectriques, plus exotiques, ont été développés à partir de matériaux tels que des silicides [Gross 95], des superréseaux
InGaAs/InGaAlAs [Zeng 06] ou bien encore de composés Heusler comme le Fe2VAl
[Mikami 07].
V - Conclusion du chapitre 1
Ce chapitre a tout d’abord présenté différentes notions générales sur la thermoélectricité telles que les effets thermoélectriques (Seebeck, Peltier, Thomson), ou bien encore les grandeurs physiques principales intervenant (rendement de conversion, facteur de mérite…).
Les matériaux thermoélectriques ont ensuite été « classés » selon leur nature et leur performance thermoélectrique (conductivité électrique, pouvoir thermoélectrique, conductivité thermique), et les principales voies de recherche sur les nouvelles classes de matériaux ont été présentées. Enfin, un état de l’art sur les modules thermoélectriques existants a été présenté. Il est à noter que, finalement, très peu de modules thermoélectriques existent dans le monde du fait de la complexité et du nombre d’étapes technologiques nécessaires à leur réalisation. En effet, leur développement nécessite de maîtriser la synthèse ou la croissance des matériaux thermoélectriques eux-mêmes (des deux types n et p), mais aussi des substrats ou matrices les supportant, l’assemblage des matériaux thermoélectriques et connecteurs métalliques pour réaliser les jonctions, voire également la possibilité de les caractériser.
Ce sont ces travaux qui vont maintenant être détaillés dans les chapitres suivants, tout d’abord à partir de matériaux semimétalliques (chapitre 2), puis à partir de matériaux semiconducteurs nanostructurés (chapitres 3 et 4).
