Cette étude avait pour objectifs principaux d’évaluer la concentration T-Hg et en Se chez plusieurs espèces d’organismes très présents près des côtes allemandes de la mer Baltique et de déterminer leurs sources potentielles de variation.
Ce travail a permis de mettre en évidence des variations importantes des concentrations en T-Hg et Se entre la moule commune, le hareng, le flet, le cabillaud, le marsouin, le phoque commun et le phoque gris. Les concentrations musculaires en T-Hg sont beaucoup plus variables que les concentrations en Se. D’une part, elles dépendent de la position de l’espèce dans la chaine trophique et de son lieu de vie. Ainsi, elles varient selon la zone d’occurrence des organismes dans la colonne d’eau, avec des concentrations plus élevées chez les espèces benthiques que chez les espèces pélagiques. D’autre part, les concentrations en mercure sont corrélées à la taille des individus et augmentent donc avec l’âge. Au contraire, les concentrations en Se ne sont influencées ni par le niveau trophique de l’organisme, ni par son lieu de vie, ni par sa taille.
Par ailleurs, cette étude a mis en évidence des concentrations en T-Hg chez les organismes vivant près des côtes allemandes de la mer Baltique plus élevées que celles des écosystèmes marins voisins. Chez les poissons, ces concentrations moyennes restent néanmoins en deçà des normes fixées par les autorités européennes et mondiales pour la consommation humaine. Toutefois, la plupart des individus échantillonnés n’atteignaient pas la taille marchande minimale. Dès lors, un échantillonnage d’individus plus âgés permettrait une meilleure évaluation du niveau de contamination des poissons de la mer Baltique et une meilleure connaissance des risques liés à leur consommation.
