I. INTRODUCTION
We
study
second-order differentialequations
of the form:where

and the unknown function X is a m x msymmetric
real matrix.Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincaré - Physique théorique - 0246-0211 Vol. 49/89/03/369/7/$2,70/(6) Gauthier-Villars

The method we use is the same which has allowed to prove the existence of a
symplectic
action of the torus associated to theOlshanetsky-Pere-
lomov systems of the class V
( [F 1 ], [F2]).
We associate to
( 1)
a Hamiltoniansystem
for asymplectic
form introdu-ced
by Kazhdan-Kostant-Sternberg [K-K-S]
and usedby
J. Moser[M].
For a
quadratic h,
weget
aquartic
anharmonic flow on thecotangent
bundle of the Liealgebra u (m).
We show the existence for this system ofa m x m Lax
pair
whoseeigenvalues
are in involution for thesymplectic
form.
The
Calogero-Moser
Hamiltonian describes anintegrable
system of mparticles
on the lineinteracting pairwise
via aninverse-quadratic potential [M]).
It has been observed
by
M. Adler[A]
that the system staysintegrable
under the influence of an external
quadratic potential.
Following
the work ofKazhdan-Kostant-Sternberg,
the systems of Calo-gero-Moser
type can be seen assymplectic
reductions of harmonic flowson the cotangent bundle of a
simple
Liealgebra.
The second-order differential
equations
that we consider heregive
aftera
symplectic
reduction theCalogero-Moser system
with aquartic
externalpotential.
We find as a consequence of the main theorem that the reduced system iscompletely integrable
in the Arnol’d-Liouville sense. This last result had been obtainedpreviously by Wojciechowski [W]
andindepen- dently
Inozemtzev[I].
Thenovelty
of ourapproach
is in the use of theKazhdan-Kostant-Sternberg machinery
which makes all thesubject
morecoherent.
Hamiltonian systems of
quartic
type have been also studied in[F-S-W]
in relation with the non-linear
Schrodinger equation.
II. SECOND-ORDER MATRIX DIFFERENTIAL
EQUATIONS
ANDHAMILTONIAN SYSTEMS FOR THE KAZHDAN-KOSTANT- STERNBERG SYMPLECTIC FORM
We are interested in second-order differential
equations
of the form:where h is
polynomial
with scalar coefficients and the unknown X is a m x m matrix. We assume that X varies in a vector space V of matrices so that the trace
provides
an identification with the dual V*through
themapping
The
cotangent
bundle T*V~VxV* isequipped

symplectic form 03C9=Tr(dX
/BdY) following [K-K-S].

H (X,

QUARTIC
TYPEWe use the matrices
In the
following, (X, Y)
are assumed to be realsymmetric
matrices sothat :

We are concerned with the Hamiltonian system
for
We use the Hermitian matrix P=ZZ. that we consider as an element of the Lie
algebra
u(m).
THEOREM 1. - The matrix P
defines
a Laxpair for
the Hamiltonian system(4)
and itseigenvalues
are in involutionfor
thesymplectic form
co.Proof. -
We get from(4):
Hamilton’s
equations (2) give:
where the
symbol {{ A, B}}
means the anti-commutator of the two matrices A and B.We get:
Vol. 49, n° 3-1989.
372 J. P. FRANÇOISE AND O. RAGNISCO
So that P is a Lax matrix for the flow of H. As
corollary,
we obtain that theeigenvalues
of P are constants of the motion.Let A be one the
eigenvalues
of P and 03A8 be thecorresponding eigenvec-
tor. Let T be the
projector
on thesubspace generated by
03A8. The matrixP
being Hermitian,
we can assume that 03A8 is normalized for the standard Hermitianproduct ~ , ~
on empreserved by
P. We get:( 8)
Let us now consider the Hamiltonian flow
generated by
A and thesymplectic
form (o. The dot willdesignate
the time-derivativealong
thisflow.
Hamilton’s
equations give:
and so we get
first,
then,
This allows to compute
P,
Now we observe that P and T can be
codiagonalized
so thatWe deduce then
that,
for all
integer k,
andthen,
which
implies
that thequantities
are constants of the motion.Hence,
theeigenvalues
of P are constants of the motion. But this is true for the flow of any of theeigenvalues
ofP,
so we deduce that theeigenvalues
of P are in involution. This ends theproof.
DExample. -
Let us consider the case where X is a 2 x 2symmetric
realmatrix.

MATRIX SECOND-ORDER DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
The
equation ( 1) gives:
From the theorem
1,
we know that there are two conservedquantities.
Itwould be
interesting
to decide in that case if thesystem
isintegrable.
Remarks. - 1. Let us consider the
special
caseJl=O (quadratic case)
in order to compare with the
general
case.For and the
equation (7)
becomesP= 0 identically.
This means that all the entries of P are constants of the motion.
In
general
case when~0,
theequation ( 7)
tells thatonly
theeigenvalues
of P are
preserved by
the flow. Also( 12)
becomes:but
[P,T]=0,
soP= 0 identically
also.Thus,
all the entries of Parepreserved by
the flow of anyeigenvalue.
Going
back to( 11),
we get:One can show
[F]
that( 15)
defines asymplectic
action of the torusTm,
this is nolonger
true for2. The
proof
does not extend as it stands to Hamiltonian systems of the sextictype.
IV. COMPLETE INTEGRABILITY OF THE CALOGERO-MOSER SYSTEM WITH AN EXTERNAL
QUARTIC
POTENTIALLet U be the vector space of m x m Hermitian matrices. The
cotangent
bundle T* ô/J may be identified As acotangent bundle,
it has asymplectic
structure which can be written[K-K-S]:
We define on the

Vol. 49, n° 3-1989.
374 J. P. FRAN(;OISE AND O. RAGNISCO The Hamiltonian H is invariant under this action.
Following [K-K-S]
weproceed
to a reduction ofby
thesymplectic
action of G.
By using
the identification( 16),
a fiber of the moment mapcan be seen as

We choose for C the element Let

Hamilton’s

The
following
result is a direct consequence of the theoremproved
in theprevious paragraph:
COROLLARY 1. - The
Calogero-Moser System
with an externalquartic potential defined by
the Hamiltonian(17)
isintegrable in the
Liouville sense.
Proof. -
The theorem shows that the mquantities
arein involution.
They
stay in involution after the reduction. FurthermoredF 1
A ... AdFk
is notidentically
zero since for~=0,
we have the usualCalogero-Moser System
with an externalquadratic potential
and we knowthat the functions
F l’

aregenerically independent
in that case[A].
The
symplectic
manifold T* W is 2m-dimensional,
so we have shown the Arnol’d-Liouvilleintegrability
of theSystem ( 1).

hypersurfaces
of constant energy arecompact

the Arnol’d-Liouville
theorem,
there are invariant tori and the solutions of( 18)
arequasi-periodic
functions of the time.Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincaré - Physique theorique
