PREFACE

Kember States of the Western Pacific Rogiou of

WHo

have been formulating strategies and dave loping and impl~ntiQg procedures and mechanisms to achieve the goal of health for all by the year 2000 within the given time-frame. The development and prO'lisiou of

informstiou support has been conaidered a priority area for pr08l'1IIIIIIIII development and management in relation to the health ~all

strategy. Since its inception, .the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Kedical Research has emphasized the need to establish and

facilitate procedures for effective biomedical information exchange so as to permit the conduct of appropriate research to develop health systems based on primary health care.

In the Western Pacific Region, health systems research has been a priority area for promotion and development since 1976. As a part of this function, ·WHO has also been developingmechaniBmB and procedures i:o generate, compile and dissemina.te research information to

facilitate acce88 to this information by interested persona and institutions.

As a start, the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific distributed a questionnaire withgnidelines for its completion to persons known to be interested or involved in health systems

research. Based on the responses received, an Inventory of Health Systems Res8archhas been compiled. There were in all 166 health systems research studies from eight countries or areas. I t is

recognized that these responses represent only a s~ll percentage of actual health systems research studies undertaken or being undertaken

in the RegiOn and that this may only reflect the tip of the iceberg.

However, efforts are being made to develop the capability, mechanisms and procedures at national level to establish and periodically update such national inventories in order to facilitate dissemination of research information among res8archer·s and between researchers and heal th programme planners and managers.

I t should be noted that, in spite of the precautiona taken, some errors may have crept in. Any suggestions you wish to make for the improvement of this document would be greatly appreciated.

Hiroshi Nakajima, M.D., Ph.D •.

This document is divided into two parts - the first part contains the

!!SR studies arranged or sorted, by country and title (in alphabetical order) and by programme and concern (in numerical order). The second part contains the information sheets for individual IlSR studies arral!8ed by

country. .

Readers can locate a particular BSR information sheet by using:

the counery index <p!rt I, List I, pp. 1-8) to identify !!SR studies in a particular country;

the title index (P!rt I, List 2, pp. 9-16) to identify DBR studies according to titles in a particl1lar country;

the programme index* (Part I, List 3, pp. 17-24) to identify IISR stUelies according to programmes in a particular country; and the concern inelex** (p!rt I, List 4, pp. 25-32) to ielentify IISR stuelies according to concern in a particular country.
