MISMATCHED COAXIAL CABLES

Several customers have used whatever coaxial cable is on hand-- RG 59 or a mix of RG 48 and 8--to daisy chain 1900/10 system terminals and station printers. The result is some obvious and not-so-obvious problems which will occur irregularly.

The rules are simple:

RG 8 or RG 58, BUT NOT MIXED, when no device is further than 1000 feet from the CPU

RG 8 ONLY when ANY device is more than 1000 feet from the CPU

DO NOT MIX RG 8 AND RG 58 on the same system DO NOT USE ANY OTHER SIZE OF COAXIAL CABLE, EVER

It's important to check, especially when coax devices are not placed near the CPU, to assure that the customer has not pro- vided or substituted a nonsupported cable or mix of cable typeso

Cables are often mixed because all coax looks pretty much the same, and the impact of mixing isn't known.
