This video contains an interview with the user Inger Rålenius. We talk about Audio Description, Subtitles and Audio Subtitles, and how to make them easier to understand. The interviewer is Ester Hedberg, The Swedish National Association f or Dyslexia.

Inger Rålenius presents herself

Inger Rålenius Hi, my name is Inger. Inger Rålenius. I am an advisor at the Swedish National Association for Dyslexia.

And I, myself, am dyslexic.

Question 1:

What is your opinion on subtitles, audio subtitles and audio description?

Ester Hedberg Do you usually read subtitles, listen to audio subtitles, or to audio descriptions when you watch TV or go to the movies? And what do you think of it?

Inger Rålenius I see subtitles every day when I watch TV. I don’t like subtitles. I can almost never read them.

Subtitles are mostly irritating, I avoid looking at them. They just drain me.

On the other hand, the times I have tried audio subtitles it was fantastic. Really great. I have been able to keep up and understand.

But I have also tried audio descriptions. To my great surprise it was a relief to hear the

descriptions. To get names and descriptions of things. What I like best is to use both audio descriptions and audio subtitle and be able to decide how I want it.

Question 2:

Do you sometimes find audio visual content hard to understand?

Ester Hedberg Do you think it is sometimes difficult to

understand what’s happening in movies and on TV?

Inger Rålenius I don’t often think that the contents themselves are difficult. Because I am very interested in what's going on around me I keep up with current issues.

What can be difficult is if there is a feature story in French or German. And I have to read the text, which I can’t. It's okay if it's English. I can keep up and understand. But any other language is extremely irritating.

Question 3:

Do you think it would be helpful if the subtitles were written in easy language?

Ester Hedberg Would it help you if the subtitles were written in simplified language?

Inger Rålenius I'm sure there are people who would want easy- to-read subtitles. Personally, I want the subtitles

and what’s being said to be exactly the same.

Because I look at the text while I read with my ears.

For me, it gets confusing if the subtitles and what's being said are not the same.

Question 4:

So, you prefer audio subtitles. Can you please tell us a bit more about that?

Ester Hedberg You prefer to have audio subtitles. Can you tell me a bit more about that?

Inger Rålenius As of yet, there are very few situations that have audio subtitles. But when there are, I want to use them.

My greatest wish is for there to be audio subtitles for all movies, news pieces and public service programs. Everywhere on TV actually.

There shouldn’t be a singlesubtitle that is not read out loud. In the future. That is my wish.
