HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of sci-entific research documents, whether they are pub-lished or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers.

L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des laboratoires publics ou privés.

Life depends on climate variables such as light energy, temperature and water. These parameters are par;cularly cri;cal for sessile plants, and especially for long-lived tree species. All around the world, global climate change is responsible for significant varia;on of tree development, affec;ng annual cycle, growth decay and mortality events. Therefore, wood variability as expressed in tree-rings, is a fundamental indicator for climate, ecosystem and environment, and thus, can be used for climate change studies.

"

We aim to perform basic studies and develop new tools able to measure wood adapta;ve traits. They can be used for different purposes such as reconstruc;ons of past climate condi;ons, beBer understanding of tree adapta;on to abio;c stresses and clima;c changes, sustainable forest produc;on, and wood transforma;on according to different end-using. Our goal is to create an interna;onal network of open laboratories between Europe and La;n America. Moreover, we aim to reinforce EU and LAC researchers’ access to infrastructure and common exper;se, in the objec;ve to develop and test innova;ve tools/methods for wood adapta;ve traits measurement. The founders are leaders in their respec;ve research area such as ecophysiology, wood chemistry, quan;ta;ve gene;cs, wood technology. They belong to the following ins;tu;ons: INTA Bariloche and Tandil, Na;onal University of Misiones (Argen;na), ESALQ-USP (Brazil), INRA Val de Loire (France), CIRAD (France), University of Lisboa (Portugal). They are involved in studies on tree adapta;on to climate changes across wood forma;on and wood property impact. NetWoodResist network is funded by ERANet-LAC Program, for La;n America and the Caribbean countries joint innova;on and research ac;vi;es, related to current na;onal or interna;onal projects (Topwood EU Marie Sklodowska- Curie RISE, Consor;um Studium Centre Val de Loire, Empir Region Centre Val de Loire, Fapesp, Agropolis-Capes, Cofecub-Capes…). Example of tools we apply in studies of

forest responses to drought stress:

• Cavita;on resistance measured by Embolitron tool • Wood density and dendrochronology by X-Ray microdensitometry • Wet chemistry of wood compounds (extrac;ves, lignin, cellulose) • Wood chemicals in micro-samples by pyrolysis analysis • Near InfraRed Spectroscopy applied for wood • Cambial ac;ity, wood anatomy and cell-wall ultrastructure • Field experiment in natural forests and planta;ons • Automa;c growth monitoring, applica;on tools in the field 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 30690135 0 201 0 267 0 333 0 399 0 465 0 531 0 597 0 663 0 729 0 795 0 861 0 927 0 993 0 105 90 112 50 119 10 125 70 132 30 138 90 145 50 152 10 158 70 165 30 171 90 178 50 185 10 191 70 198 30 204 90 211 50 218 10 224 70 231 30 237 90 244 50 251 10 257 70 264 30 270 90 277 50 284 10 290 70 297 30 303 90 310 50 317 10 323 70 330 30 336 90 343 50 350 10 356 70 363 30 369 90 376 50 383 10 389 70 396 30 402 90 409 50 416 10 422 70 429 30 435 90 442 50 449 10 455 70 462 30 468 90 475 50 482 10 488 70 495 30 501 90 508 50 515 10 521 70 528 30 534 90 541 50 548 10 554 70 561 30 567 90 574 50 581 10 587 70 594 30 600 90 +H20/-K -H2O/-K -H2O/+K +H20/+K G.
