ECCAS, CEMAC, UN System gear up to review progress on NEPAD in Central Africa

Yaounde, 08 October 2012 (ECA) - Agencies of the UN System and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of Central Africa are expected to review progress of and gear up towards boosting the AU’s NEPAD programme in the sub-region during a multi-stakeholder meeting billed for Okoume Palace hotel in Libreville on 17 October 2012. The encounter, convened by the Sub-Regional Office for Central Africa of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA/SRO-CA), will be the fourth follow-up meeting of the Sub Regional Coordination Mechanism of the UN System-wide support to the AU’s NEPAD programme in the sub region.
The meeting will particularly seek to draw a balance sheet of the Common Indicative Programme for the implementation of the AU/NEPAD programme in Central Africa, covering the period of 2010-2012 while projecting into future programmes. The said programme that is based on the first Multi Year Programme of cooperation between ECA, CEMAC and ECCAS with contribution from other UN agencies and partner institutions comprises six major components: (1) Infrastructure, Transport, Energy, ICT, Water and Hygiene infrastructure development coordinated by BDEAC, (2) Governance, Peace and Security led by UNDP, (3) Commerce, Industry and Access to Markets overseen by UNIDO, (4) Agriculture, Food Security and Environment followed up by FAO, (5)Science & Technology, Human Resource Support, Employment and HIV/AIDS coordinated by ILO, and (6) the Development of Institutional Frameworks supervised by ECA/SRO-CA.
Meanwhile, the Libreville SRCM meeting will be followed on 18 October 2012 by an ad hoc expert group meeting to review 2011-2013 the Multi Year Programme of cooperation between ECA/SRO-CA, CEMAC and ECCAS (MYP II) in order to recommend the course of action for the remaining period of the current lap of the Programme. The first lap of the Programme, which ran from 2007 to 2010, scored an 88% implementation rate in spite of setbacks such as the short supply of appropriate human resources.
