Beijing +10: ECA to Organize Sub-regional Meetings to Review Progress Made

Addis Ababa, 13 April 2004 (ECA/ACGD) – The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its African centre for Gender and Development (ACGD) and its various subregional development centres, is organizing a series of meetings within the context of the ten-year review of the progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action for the Advancement of Women (Beijing+10).

In keeping with the mandate assigned to it by the General Assembly of the United Nations, ECA is making a contribution to this evaluation process by holding an initial round of meetings at the subregional level, as follows:

West Africa, 13-15 April (Abuja, Nigeria, North Africa), 14-16 April (Tangier, Morocco), Central Africa, 19-21 April (Brazzaville, Congo), Southern Africa, 26-29 April (Lusaka, Zambia).

The main purpose of these subregional meetings is to assess the progress made since Beijing 1995 and the cogency of the achievements realized so far in reducing inequalities between men and women both at the national and subregional levels.

The meetings will also focus on the various difficulties encountered in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action, and will endeavour to identify the means to be deployed towards bridging the gaps identified in the evaluation process.

For the first time, various ministries will be invited to participate in the evaluation process in order to gauge the content of gender mainstreaming in the context of national development strategies and programmes.

High-level representatives from ministries of planning, health, finance, agriculture, trade, industry and the status of women will take part in these important subregional meetings. Representatives of specialized agencies of the United Nations and subregional intergovernmental organizations, as well as legislators and members of the civil society will also participate at these meetings.

The outcome of these proceedings and the decisions emanating from the same will serve as a basis for the ten-year evaluation report on the implementation of the Beijing Platform in Africa, which should be Africa’s input into the global evaluation scheduled for 2005.
