Sujet :

Service Engineering and Traffic Management Strategies in Cognitive Radio Networks

Durée :

5 Months

Descriptif :

Cognitive radio networking [1] is a new paradigm of communication that attract wireless users, operators and service providers. Benefiting from unused licensed spectrum opportunistically can enhance the quality of communication for existing services such as VoIP and web surfing, or provide new communication services such as low-priced SMS and background media transfer [2]. The concept is based on using dynamically as much frequency bands as needed without impacting ongoing licensed (called also primary) users transmissions. Thus, in this scenario new protocols should be designed to take into account the interaction with primary users dynamically. The challenge is to ensure continuous services over the dynamic nature of the spectrum. The quality of the required service must be studied and according to the spectrum properties this service can be integrated in the network if adequate algorithms are used. These algorithms will perform channel selection and spectrum handoff in order to allocate to each service (traffic) what it needs. Existing traffic engineering techniques are not usable straightforwardly since they do not account for the dynamic nature of the spectrum. An adaptive mapping between the services and available channels should be found and maintained. This is one of the objectives of the national ANR LICORNE project that funds the internship.

The main task in this internship after the state of the art is to study and design thoroughly a strategy to integrate several services through networks using cognitive radios to access a dynamic and unpredictable spectrum.

Some simulations will be then conducted in order to illustrate and validate this strategy. Technical and engineering support will be provided to the intern in order to perform easily simulations using OMNET++. Accordingly, the internship calendar is the following:.

- State of the art of cognitive radio networks including spectrum handoff, channel selection, spectrum sharing, performance of multimedia services and traffic engineering. (0.5 to 1 Month)

- Study and design of a clear and complete strategy(ies) for service integration over cognitive radio networks. (2 to 2.5 Months)

- Evaluation through OMNET++ simulations (0.5 to 1 Month)
