Address by

DR HUSSEIN A. GEZAIRY REGIONAL DIRECTOR

WHO EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN REGION on the occasion of

100-YEAR CELEBRATION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ALEXANDRIA EYE HOSPITAL Alexandria, Egypt, 3 June 2010

Your Excellency Governor of Alexandria, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to join you on this remarkable occasion celebrating 100 years of Alexandria Eye Hospital, an establishment that has contributed such a great deal to eye care and elimination of avoidable blindness in Alexandria, Egypt.

As you know, vision is perhaps the most important of our senses and the majority of our day-to-day activities are vision-related. Most of us find it difficult to comprehend what it would be like to lead a life without vision. Blindness has profound effect on a person’s life. It compromises the ability to perform basic activities of daily living, leading to progressive loss of independence, and becomes a financial burden to families and societies. Many studies have found that spending on blindness prevention programmes is a worthwhile investment for countries.

Ladies and Gentlemen

Unfortunately, in Egypt, over 800 000 people are blind. A survey conducted by Al Noor Foundation in 2001 in Menoufia Governorate indicates that the prevalence of blindness is around 1.2%. The main cause of blindness in Egypt is cataract which accounts for 54% of blindness cases. Yet cataract can be easily corrected with a simple operation.

In December 2009, WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Egypt conducted a rapid assessment of avoidable blindness in three governorates: Beni Suef, Fayoum and Kafr El-Sheikh. The survey showed that Bani Suef has the highest prevalence of

blindness, 11%, among people above the age of 50, followed by Fayoum 7% and Kafr El- Skeikh 5 %.

To overcome this huge burden of blindness, the Ministry of Health developed a national plan for eye care in April 2007 in collaboration with WHO and International Agency for Prevention of Blindness. Several years ago to enhance the childhood blindness programme, WHO in collaboration with the Lions Clubs International Foundation selected Alexandria Eye Hospital to be a centre for the childhood blindness programme in Egypt, and provided support for five years from 2003 to 2008 in the areas of training, human resources development and supply of equipment and low vision aids. Recently, WHO and the Foundation extended their support for the hospital.

I am very pleased to highlight the progress made by the Alexandria Eye Hospital, under the leadership of the Director, particularly in recent years, through providing better eye care services and facilities. Significant work has been done by the hospital to tackle childhood blindness in terms of service delivery, and the hospital is now a training centre for paediatric ophthalmology. The hospital has also established a low vision clinic and conducted cataract outreach activities.

WHO is working closely with the hospital and providing technical support. We now need to make use of the expertise and knowledge gained by the centre and share it with others, to achieve the target of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In order to strengthen advocacy for eye care and prevention of blindness in Egypt, on 8 October 2009, WHO Regional Office celebrated World Sight Day at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Library of Alexandria) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Alexandria Eye Hospital and partners working in gender and blindness.

It is worth noting that Alexandria Eye Hospital plays a vital role in advancing eye care in Alexandria Governorate. I wish the hospital continued success. I hope it will extend its role in eliminating avoidable blindness in Alexandria, and become a model centre for training, human resources development and research in ophthalmology.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you on this great occasion, especially H.E.

General Adel Ali Labib, Governor of Alexandria; Dr Salama Abdel Moneim, Undersecretary, Ministry of Health, Alexandria; Dr Salwa Al-Sayed, Director, Alexandria Eye Hospital; and

the Lions Clubs International Foundation. On behalf of the Regional Office, I would like to assure you of our continued support to reduce avoidable blindness in Egypt under the global initiative of VISION 2020.
