HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of sci- entific research documents, whether they are pub- lished or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers.

L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d’enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des laboratoires publics ou privés.

5th edition of the

«

Journées Nationales Microondes »

Editorial

The fifth edition of the

«

Journées Nationales Microondes

»,

held in Nice June 22-24, 1987, attracted

some

400 microwave scientists and engineers. This meeting provided

an

opportunity for informal contacts and

fruitful discussions among the participants from diverse horizons : private R & D, universities and

engineering schools, and French and European research organizations (CNRS, CNES, CNET, DRET...).

Moreover, it offered

a

comprehensive survey of microwave research under way in France, emphasizing the dynamism of the various teams involved, and the extremely interesting results obtained. Lastly, these

discussions bore out the complementarity of research efforts in different

areas

of microwaves, and the increasing interaction among them. From device physics to millimeter

wave

radiometry for atmospheric studies, there is

a

distinct continuity and

an

ever-growing need for strong ties among these developments.

This special issue features

a

number of noteworthy papers presented at the

«

Journées

».

Certain of the

authors solicited by the Technical Committee agreed to have their papers published in this issue.

The topics proposed

are

highly representative of the research work going

on

today, and the reader will readily note the complementarity and continuity linking these topics. For instance, modeling of physical and

electric devices is essential not only for the design and optimization of

new

devices, but also for enhancing

the performance of integrated

or

hybrid active circuits. By the

same

token, technological advances, by lowering costs and improving performances, open the way to

new

microwave applications in

an

expanding

market context. Reciprocally,

new

applications directed toward widespread consumption

or

the growing

use

of microwaves in technological processes, spur the development of novel devices and components. These different aspects

are

clearly underlined in the papers published in this special issue.
