Objectives :

Disover the eliminationmethodfor solving a system.

Materials :

Task sheets.

10ut-out oloured ard sheets.

Slideshow.

1 – Example 5 mins

There are three type of oloured ards :green, yellowand blue.

Eahblueardhasavalueof1,butthevaluesofthegreenandyellowardsareunknown.

Thefollowingsystemhastobesolvedtondoutthevaluesofthe greenand yellowards.

Two greenards and two yellow ards make four.

Threegreen ards and one yelloward makefour.

The steps of the method are shown below.

1. Set up the two equations.

2. Multiply one equation so that the

numberofyellow(orgreen)ards are

equal.

3. Take fromeahequation the number

of green, yellowand blue ards there

4. Dedue the value ofthe green ard.

5. Gobak to the rst equation.

6. Replae eah green ard by the ap-

propriate numberof blue ards.

7. Subtrat the same number of blue

ards from both sides.

8. Dedue the value ofthe yellow ard.

9. Conlude:thevaluesofthegreenand

yellowards are both equalto1.

2 – Solve systems with tokens Remaining time

Students work in pairs. Eah pair has to solve 10 systems with this method(the teaher

should hek that noother method is used). Every good answer earns two points to the

team.
