”Parental migration and left behind children’s educational achievements in rural China”

While a large literature has emphasized the impact of migration on children left behind in sending areas, this paper is the first to highlight the importance of temporary changes in parental migration status on the changes of left-behind children’s educational achievements. Using a unique two-wave panel (CEPS), I investigate how the disruptive family arrangement, due to short-term migration, affect left behind children’s educational performances. In particular, I distinguish the impact of out- migration and return migration between father and mother, siblings and grandparents. I find parental migration significantly reduces left behind children’s math, English, and cognitive scores in the short- run; while the return of parents increase Chinese scores. The detrimental effect is especially strong with boys’ math and girls’ English. Living with siblings can mitigate the effect while grandparents’

care not very obvious. The return of parents has significantly positive effects on academic outcomes, especially with mothers.
