Ibn Soulaymane Arrassmouki Unit 9, Vocabulary Technical High School Science and Technology

Name: ……….

The words science and technology are often used interchangeably by many people. Therefore, it is important to note that while the goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake , the goal of technology is to create products, machines and tools, solve technical problems , and improve human life based on that scientific knowledge. Simply put, technology is the application of science in practical ways.

Science is concerned with the systematic study of the empirical world. In other words, scientists use observation, experimentation, generalizations, and analysis to describe and explain natural phenomena, or natural laws. This is also called the scientific method. On the other hand, technology focuses more on design, invention, and production. It’s more of an applied science whose purpose is to meet the needs of people in all aspects of life. Some major branches of science include physics, chemistry, biology, life and earth sciences, and genetics. Some major branches of technology include telecommunication, automation, aerospace, engineering, computing, energy development, and robotics.

III. Read the definitions below and try to notice the difference between science and technology. Focus on the words in bold type.

Science Reliable knowledge and theory; the type that can be logically and rationally explained. Thus, science is the study of the natural world by collecting data through a systematic process called the scientific method.

Technology

The making, modification, usage and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a pre-existing solution or perform a specific function. Technology is where we apply science to create devices that can solve problems and do tasks. Technology is literally the application of science. So, it really is impossible to separate the two.

IV.

Match each item with its corresponding definition.

1. Robotics a. the systematic study of the structures of the physical world. ………

2. Invention b. the application of science for practical, industrial, commercial, or military purposes. ………

3. Physics c. a method of investigation involving observation and theory to test scientific hypotheses. ………

4. The empirical world d. all that can be observed. ………

(2)

5. Discovery e. the testing of existing theories or new hypotheses to support or disprove them. ………

6. Scientific knowledge f. knowledge accumulated by systematic study and organized by general principles. ………

7. Technology g. the act of inventing , or something that was invented (an original device or process). ………

8. Scientist h. the process of finding information, a place, or an object, especially for the first time. ………

9. Experimentation i. a branch of science which studies natural forces, such as energy, heat and light. ………

10. The scientific method

j. mechanical engineering that deals with the design, construction, and operation of robots. ………

11. Science k. a person who studies or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences. ………

V. Select items from the list to complete the chart.

Newton’s Law of Gravity - life sciences - Earth is not the center of the universe - empirical science - airplane - cars - the telephone exact sciences - the satellite - Einstein’s Principle of Relativity - the train - physical science - Edison’s electric light bulb - the Internet - cell-phones - the radio - human sciences - robots - the telagraph - the camera - Darwin’s Theory of Evolution - video games.
