++et l'anion X— dans des ferromagnétiques
EuX (X = O, S, Se, Te) [1].
++dilué dans
Eu i -sSrzS par spectrométrie Môssbauer de i
5*Eu [2].
++.
pet / P .
Abstract. — We report on recent results of a systematic study of transferred and supertransferred hyperfine interactions at both, the Eu++-cation and the X— anion sites in the Heisenberg
ferro-magnets EuX (X = O, S, Se, Te) [1]. Emphasis is laid on Mossbauer effect results on supertrans-ferred h. f. fields measured at 1 5iEu and 125Te nuclei. They are deduced from the differences in the
magnetic h. f. splitting observed between the antiferromagnetically and ferromagnetically ordered spin state in external magnetic fields up to 13 T. Further results have been obtained from a recent study of the 15 'Eu Mossbauer spectra of the Sr++-diluted Eu i -*Sr*S series [2].
The supertransferred h. f. field contributions, ABr, between rth Eu-neighbours are related to the
corresponding exchange constants, Jr, of the isotropic Heisenberg exchange operator.
The variation of the total transferred h. f. field at the »5 !Eu nucleus in the ferromagnetic ordered
phase gives evidence for two competing transfer and exchange mechanisms [3] :
— A negative contribution, AB», related to the negative superexchange constant, /p, mediated
by the valence band electrons.
— A competing positive contribution, ABa, related to the positive exchange constant, /d due
to the overlap of the Eu+ +-5d orbitals.
The observed decrease of ABp with increasing covalency of the Eu-X bond, but decreasing
valence electron density is in contradiction to the general assumption that the Anderson super-exchange Jz is the predominant contribution. There is evidence that A 5p and 7p include the
contri-butions ABr and Jr up to r = 6 at least, in agreement with a model recently proposed by G. A. Sawatz-ky et al. [4]. Together with the observed changes of the EuX band structure between EuO and EuTe it also accounts for the observed strong decrease of the positive contributions ABd and Ja,
which are of shorter range than A 5p and JP.
