PENICILLIN PRODUCTION Report of the Director General
The Wurld Health Assembly authorised negotiations with tho UNRRA authorities with regard to the taking отег of the completion of penicillin plants^ the funds for this to be provided by UNRRA.1 This referred to the completion of penicillin plants furnished by UNRRA bo a number of UNRRA-aided countries• A pre-requisite to successful negotiations was a technical survey of the status of these plants and the requirements in equipment and technical assis- tance necessary to bring them into Operation.
Although enquiries have been made, it has been impossible
so far to find a qualified expert or experts in penicillin production who would be available to make an adequate burvey. Because of the imminent liquidation of UNRRA, it was necessary t^ make a request to UNRRA for funds without having full and detailed information. A letter was sent to UNRRA making a rough estimate of 1 million dollars as the cost of putting the penicillin plants into operation. A reply has been reçeived from UNRRA stating that no UNRRA funds could be made available•
In view bf the foregoing circumstances and in view of the fact that WHO does not have funds available to give financial assist- ance £cc the completion of the plants^ it does not seem advisable to take further steps toward making a technical survey, unless a parti- cular request was tv3 be received from an individual country.
