ICT, Science and Technology Committee to be established in the National Assembly of the Gambia

24-25 November 2009 - Banjul, the Gambia - In collaboration with the National Assembly of the Gambia, the Information Communication Technologies, Science and Technology Division (ISTD), facilitated a 2-day Member of Parliament (MP) workshop on “The role of Parliament in promoting ICT, Science and Technology for sustainable development” from 24-25 November 2009. More than forty Members of Parliaments and staff participated in the event. The workshop was organized within the framework of ECA’s ECA-Finland Cooperation on ICT Development in Africa, providing expertise, guidance and capacity building to African countries implementing national ICT, Science and Technology strategies.

The main objective of the workshop was to build the capacities of National Assembly Members in ICT, Science and Technology for socio-economic development and the use of technologies to strengthen accountability and transparency and also to enhance the representative, legislative and oversight functions of MP’s.

In his opening remarks, Honourable Elizabeth F.Y. Renner, speaker of National Assembly noted that “the workshop marks another milestone in the process for establishing the right enabling environment for ICT, Science, Technology and Innovation towards the realisation of the Gambia’s policy of poverty alleviation, vision 2020 and to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).” She called on MP’s to effectively play their critical role of legislator, advocacy and representative of the people.

Mr. Thierry Amoussougbo, Regional Advisor of ECA explained that the role of parliamentarians as publicly elected officials and lawmakers of the country placed them at the centre of the process of promoting ICT, Science, Technology and Innovation towards improving efficiency in delivering the MDGs and accelerating the achievements of development agendas objectives.

Mr. Amoussougbo advised that this workshop would also serve as a forum to launch the Gambia National Assembly ICT Master Plan development and garner MP support for the implementation of the ICT, Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy through the transformation of the ICT committee into the ICT, Science and Technology Committee.
