BOWS AND ARROWS

Improving knowledge and preservation of the ethnographic collections

of extra-European archery.

April 4, 5 and 6

th

2012.

The project:

Since 2009, the Musée Museum départemental des Hautes Alpes (France) has been undertaking a series of missions dealing with a retrospective inventory. These tasks have given an opportunity to extend the work done on the collections and to rediscover fabulous series of artifacts which had been forgotten.

In the course of 2010, the museum has offered an exhibition entitled “l’Arc du Naturel” to a wide audience. This exhibition has been set up in collaboration with Alain Sunyol and the Society of Archers-Antiquaries. This event enabled the numerous visitors to see a selection of archery items from the museum collections and to be informed of the state of our research through “a visitor’s notebook”. From May 2011, the public has been able to see part of the Sunyol collection in the “Terra Amata” museum of human paleontology in Nice (France).

The rediscovery of such collections in the cellars of a museum raises a few problems.

Which scientific methodology should be used to retrace the history of these objects? Is it possible to conduct a study of the object through experimentation? Which techniques should be used, and which choices taken in the preservation of such collections?

What position should archery be granted in museal or ethnographic collections?

This seminar will give the researchers the opportunity to examine the museum collections, to share information from everyone’s knowledge or experience, and to

contribute to a common work in order to get a better insight on this type of objects.
