The Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA) in Paris is a public research institute and a public research library specifically dedicated to art history. For 2019, the INHA launches a new call for three 3-months grants for art historians from the following regions: Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and South-East Asia. The purpose of the program is to promote national and international exchanges, especially in its fields ("Domaines") and programs. For the grantees, it should offer the opportunity to carry out research requiring the consultation of sources in Paris or France and to set up network with researchers at INHA or nationwide in France. Special collaboration with INHA scholars on topics related to the research programs or to the special collections of the Library would be ideal. Priority will be given to confirmed art history researchers, whether they are affiliated with an institution (university, museum, research institute, etc.) or independent.

The Department of Studies and Research of the INHA is organized in eight fields covering Art History chronologically and thematically. Circa 20 research programs will be running during the academic year 2018-2019, with topics ranging from Ancient to contemporary art (follow the link). The Library holds special collections ranging from rare books, prints and drawing to archival material (correspondence, autographs, unpublished works by art historians, archives of art critics and institutions).

Please note that the Archives de la Critique d'Art in Rennes are also part of the Library.

Interested researchers should contact the scientific adviser (conseiller scientifique) in charge of the relevant research area for their research (see the list) and/or the head of administration (Department of Studies and Research : [email protected]) and/or the head of Library ([email protected]) and at the same time upload their application via the form indicated on the web page.

Selection procedures

Proposals will be reviewed by the General Director, the Director of the Library, the Director of the Department of Studies and Research and the scientific advisers of the INHA. Following elements will especially be taken into account: expertise brought to the programs of the INHA, possibility of collaboration with the researchers of the INHA, valorization of the archives and primary resources of the library of the INHA, scientific contribution to one of the eight research areas of the INHA. The main selection criterion is excellence of the project.

The grant includes the financial support of the accommodation, travel expenses and the payment of a monthly scholarship of 1300 €. INHA will provide a workspace, a reserved space at the INHA library as well as access to digital and documentary resources offered by the INHA library.
