Innovations, regulations and technology transfers in North-western Europe (19
th- late 20
thcenturies)
11th & 12th October, 2010 – Université de Lille 3
Scientific Committee:
Eric Bussière (Université de Paris-Sorbonne), Michel Dumoulin (Université catholique de Louvain), Jean-François Eck (Université de Lille 3 - IRHiS), Jürgen Elvert (Universität zu Köln), Michel Lescure (Université de Paris X Nanterre), Sylvain Schirmann (Université de
Strasbourg), Jakob Vogel (Universität zu Köln) and Denis Woronoff (Emeritus Professor Paris I)
This project originates in the collaboration between the three following research groups:
- “Ces Chers Voisins”, led by Eric Bussière (Université de Paris-Sorbonne), Michel Dumoulin (Université catholique de Louvain), Jürgen Elvert (Universität zu Köln) and Sylvain Schirmann (Université de Strasbourg), and dedicated to the study of the relationships between the Benelux, Germany and France in the 19th and 20th centuries.
- The UMR 8533 « Institutions et dynamiques historiques de l’économie » (IDHE) which associates four university centres from the Paris area, among which the Université de Paris X Nanterre where Michel Lescure is Professor of contemporary economic history .
- The research project called EMERENO - Entrepreneurial efficiency and regional economic changes in North-western Europe, 18th-20th centuries, coordinated by Jean- François Eck, Professor in contemporary history at the Université de Lille III.
Relations, imitations and technology transfers were major issues in the 19th and 20th centuries in the geographic area which stretches out from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais to the Ruhr Area, going through Wallonia, the Aachen area and the Euregio Saar-Lor- Lux. Since some influential works devoted to this topic by historians like Rondo
Cameron or Sidney Pollard and other scientific contributions such as the one by Hans Seeling entitled Les Wallons pionniers de l’industrie allemande, few studies, however, have considered these relations as a central matter. The centenary of the Mining Law (1810), adopted in Napoleon’s Empire, was of great significance for all the territories under French domination at that time. It is therefore all the more reason to organize a meeting on the subject. Such a conference would be the opportunity to bring together and discuss a great deal of recent studies, some still unpublished and often carried out only on a national scale.
This issue will be dealt with during four half-days and from four different perspectives:
- Patents: a comparison of national regulations and their mutual influences, the respective roles of the key players in this field (inventors, companies, patent agencies), issues linked to European integration, methodological studies devoted to data basing ; - Legislation: close and distant origins of the Mining Law (1810) ; effects on company structures and space management ; other rules and regulations likely to be studied on a comparative basis ;
- Technology transfers: involved sectors, success stories and failures, transfer leaders, relations with other large technological innovation centres, particularly in the English- speaking world ;
- Engineers and High school technicians: the role of schools enrolling foreign students, the role of students’ mobility and of continuing education ; examples of career paths, the role of associations and clubs ;
The subject extends to the entire European continent. However, it seems hardly possible to go back before the eighteenth century. Note that this call for papers does not only apply to the two World Wars of the twentieth century.
The conference proceedings will be published in the « Euroclio » collection by Peter Lang Publishing Group.
Contributions must be submitted in French or English to jfeck@noos.fr or pierre.tilly@uclouvain.be before 15th January, 2010.
A selection will be operated for the 15th February 2010) by a scientific committee composed of Professors Eric Bussière, Michel Dumoulin, Jean-François Eck, Jürgen Elvert, Michel Lescure, Sylvain Schirmann, Jacob Vogel and Denis Woronoff
