LANGUAGE

1. Fill in the blanks with eight (8) words from the box.

A violent new video game which is set in a school and encourages players to act out assaults on pupils and teachers has been condemned by anti-bullying campaigners and teaching unions.

The game, called Bully, features a shaven-headed pupil who torments fellow students and teachers at his school. Players gain extra points by terrorising other pupils with a range of physical and psychological abuse, including dunking children’s heads in lavatories and firing catapults at teachers. Critics said the game was “glorifying” school bullying and called for it to be banned. Niall Cowley, of the charity Beat Bullying, said: “We’re disappointed this game was created in the first place. Some mindless people thought this was a fun, interesting piece of software to create, but it undermines all the hard work that organisations like ours are seeking to do. Our philosophy is about educating young people that bullying is not a cool thing to do, and this leaves us with a bad taste in the mouth.” The National Union of Teachers called for a wider ban on the game. Steve Sinnot, the general secretary, said:

“We’re deeply concerned that all the work in cutting out bullying and cyber bullying in school does not seem to have made any impact on the consciences of the makers of this game. It is an encouragement to violence and intimidation, and those things have a major impact on schools. Just the name Bully is going to attract young people to buy it.”

2. Circle the correct alternative.

Bored by work? Desperate to find a job you really enjoy?

If you are experiencing any of these feelings you are not alone – winter is the peak time for planning a career change.

Careers expert John Lees says: “If you are not enjoying your job, the work doesn’t match your skills and if more than half your time is spent doing dull or pointless things, it’s time for a change.” But before you jump, start by listing your top ten skills – those which have had the biggest impact on your job and achievements in the last 12 months. John says you need to understand your value to your employer and match your strengths to what your boss needs. He explains: “Ask your boss how you can help on important projects to develop your skills. “Don’t complain or apologise, look for a solution and tell your boss about it. Aim to drop some of the things you don’t enjoy. If you feel a job change is the only way forward, start making plans If you can’t identify your ideal job, start researching and discovering what it is you would really like to do. Don’t limit exploration to job ads and agencies – discover the

“hidden” job market by networking with people doing the job you want”.

3. Put the bracketed words in the right tense or form.

Europe’s N° 2 tour operator – which reported a bumper rise in profits – is seeing more travellers opt for Turkey, Egypt and other countries outside the euro-zone. Meanwhile bookings for Spain are flat. The trend was highlighted as Thomas Cook, which merged with MYTRAVEL last year, saw full-year pre-tax profits soar 26 per cent to £278, 6 million. Chief executive, Manny Fontenla-Novoa said: “It is something we have been looking at since November. We are negotiating hard with our suppliers, the hoteliers, so that they take the pain, too. But obviously what we have no control over is the lower buying power of the Pound once customers get into the resort.” He said Morocco and other destinations in North Africa are also growing in popularity. He said summer bookings made from the UK were two per cent down on last year. But he insisted he was upbeat as Thomas Cook has 14 per cent fewer holidays to sell than this time last year after cutting capacity. He added: “Demand is really strong.”

Journalist: Which gadget is essential to you?

DKH: My iPod. It’s always nice to have your own music……

DKH: I’m not very good at reading. But I’m a Sudoku addict – great for keeping the brain working.

DKH: Ironically, going on holiday actually gives me the chance to do some exercise. I love meeting up with friends, just getting to spend a proper time with people.
