Differential forms, orientability

Exercise 1. 1. Letf :t7→et fromRto R+ and letα= dxx, computefα.

2. Same question withf :R2 →R2 defined by(r, θ)7→(rcosθ, rsinθ) and α=dx∧dy.

Let us recall the definition of orientability.

Definition (Orientability). A manifold M of dimension n is said to be orientable if there exists a differential formω∈Ωn(M) such thatωx6= 0 for allx inM. That is, for anyx∈M, if (v1(x), ..., vn(x)) is a basis ofTxM then ωx(v1(x), ..., vn(x))6= 0. Such a formω is said to be a volume form.

Exercise 2 (Spheres). 1. Let dV = dx0 ∧ · · · ∧dxn denote the standard volume form on Rn+1 (that is the(n+ 1)-form equal to the determinant at each point) and let X be the radial vector field :x7→P

xi∂x

i.

What isω =XydV (recall that(Yyα)(Y1, . . . , Yp) =α(Y, Y1, . . . , Yp))?

2. Show thatω is invariant under the action ofSOn+1(R).

3. Leti:Sn→Rn+1 be the canonical embedding, Show thati(ω) is a volume form.

Definition(Parallelizable). We say that a manifoldM isparallelizable if there existnvector fields(X1, . . . , Xn)on M such that, for anyx∈M,(X1(x), . . . , Xn(x))is a basis of TxM. Exercise 3 (Orientability). 1. Show that any parallelizable manifold is orientable.

2. Show that a product of two orientable manifolds is itself orientable.

3. Show that the tangent bundle of a manifold is an orientable manifold.

Exercise 4 (Torus). Is the torusTn orientable? If so, give an explicit volume form.

Exercise 5 (Projective spaces). 1. Let n ∈ N and f : Sn → Sn, x 7→ −x. Is this map orientation-preserving?

2. Is the projectif spaceRPnorientable?
