“South Africa, 15 years of democracy”

Elisabeth et Benoît Antheaume Concert Cocktail

As a picture and a mirror of South Africa, the wall is usually seen as a frontier or a separation. However, it becomes a link when it is used as a support for graphic arts.

The graffitied and painted walls reveal at the same time the tensions of the Apartheid period while celebrating the birth of democracy, casting the aspirations and dreams of populations. The wall is also a vehicle of communication when it broadcasts educational or health messages, particularly when it relays the slogan of the campaign against AIDS, the “new struggle”.

Elisabeth Deliry-Antheaume, geographer and photographer, and Benoît Antheaume, scientific advisor at IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) are pleased to invite you to discover a selection of photographs collected since 1995 in practically all cities and Townships of the country which they went through tirelessly. Accross the experiences and stories they have recorded, they attempt to share with you the transformation process of the country.

These photographs are a great tribute to South Africa, guest of honour of the conference, and to its known or anonymous artists, who give us another point of view on South African cities and society.
