Preface CAID 2017

This book of Proceedings contains the accepted papers of the 1st International Workshop on “Cognition and Artificial Intelligence for Human-Centred Design” (CAID 2017), held in Melbourne, Australia, on August 19th 2017 and organised as part of the 26th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI, http://ijcai-17.org).

This workshop was launched with the idea of bringing together interdisciplinary scientific perspectives on human-centred design particularly focussing on the theme of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Cognitive Systems supported next-generation design technologies.

The core theme addressed by the workshop was on cognitive technology assisted human-centred design conception, analysis, and synthesis; approaches to the design process, and use of designed structures and artefacts from a cognitive and computational perspective. A particular focus was given to the importance of the embodied visuo-spatial thinking involved in problem-solving for the design of objects, artefacts, and people-experiences.

The workshop was attended by 30 people. We would like to thank the participants of the workshop, the authors of the selected papers as well as the Program Committee Members.
