Pastoral Message
This 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time is the 4th Sunday of the month of July. This Sunday is special for it is the first annual celebration of
“The World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly.”
It was last January 31, 2021, Sunday before the Feast of the Presentation, that Pope Francis announced the establishment of the celebration every 4th Sunday of July for it is the Sunday close to the feast of the Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. “The Holy Father said he instituted the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly because ‘grandparents are often forgotten, and we forget this wealth of preserving roots and passing on’ what the elderly have received.”
This is so true. I can’t forget when I was in grade school visiting the mother of my dad, when she was still alive. I didn’t get to see my grandpa on dad’s side because he passed away before I was born. My grandma was always happy when my sister and I come to visit her and she was telling us a lot of bible stories from an illustrated bible for children. She was always proud to tell us that she was our church’s cantor when she was young.
On the other hand, my mom’s parents lived just next door to us. They were always there to remind us to pray always and be with the family in praying the Angelus and the rosary at 6pm.
I believe that these experiences with my grandparents had their role in inspiring me to enter the seminary and be a priest. Priestly vocation is a gift but God uses people and events to stir the hearts to respond to His call.
Pope Francis was on point when he said that “the Holy Spirit even today stirs up thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly,” and that the voice of the elderly “sings the praises of God and preserves the roots of the peoples.”
As we celebrate “The World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly”, may we have time to
communicate with them, to visit them, thank them, pray for them and pray with them if possible.

Este Domingo 17 del Tiempo Ordinario es el cuarto domingo del mes de julio. Este domingo es especial porque es el primero de la celebración anual de "El Día Mundial de los Abuelos y los Ancianos". Fue el pasado 31 de enero de 2021, domingo antes de la Fiesta de la Presentación, que el Papa Francisco anunció el establecimiento de la celebración cada cuarto domingo de julio ya que es el domingo cercano a la fiesta de los Santos Joaquín y Ana, los padres de la Santísima Virgen María y los abuelos de Jesús. "El Santo Padre dijo que instituyó la Jornada Mundial de los Abuelos y los Ancianos porque 'los abuelos a menudo se olvidan, y nos olvidamos de esta riqueza de preservar las raíces y transmitir' lo que los ancianos han recibido."
Esto es tan cierto. No puedo olvidar cuando estaba en la escuela primaria visitando a la madre de mi padre, cuando ella todavía estaba viva. No llegué a ver a mi abuelo del lado de papá porque falleció antes de que yo naciera. Mi abuela siempre estaba feliz cuando mi hermana y yo veníamos a visitarla y ella nos contaba muchas historias bíblicas de una biblia ilustrada para niños. Ella siempre estuvo orgullosa de decirnos que ella era la cantor de nuestra iglesia cuando era joven.
Por otro lado, los padres de mi mamá vivían justo al lado de nosotros. Siempre estaban allí para
recordarnos que oráramos siempre y que
estuviéramos con la familia rezando el Ángelus y el rosario a las 6 pm.
Creo que estas experiencias con mis abuelos tuvieron su papel en inspirarme a entrar en el seminario y ser sacerdote. La vocación sacerdotal es un don, pero Dios usa a las personas y los eventos para agitar los corazones para responder a Su llamado.
El Papa Francisco estuvo a punto cuando dijo que "el Espíritu Santo aún hoy despierta pensamientos y palabras de sabiduría en los ancianos," y que la voz de los ancianos "canta las alabanzas de Dios y preserva las raíces de los pueblos."

Help Needed
St Vincent de Paul Déjà vu thrift shop Can you volunteer a few hours a week to help needy families in our area. The DejaVu thrift shop has helped hundreds of families with access to free and low cost clothing, furniture, housewares, etc. and profits have gone to SVdP conferences to help families with urgent needs for food, rent, utilities, medicine, transportation and other basic needs. Our Sunday Sales program at the Déjà vu shop has urgent needs for more volunteers, as this program has been a huge success. The needs include volunteers to pick up donated furniture, clean and repair furniture [“deluxing”], deliver and set up furniture at the Geneva location on Sunday morning, help customers with sales, and deliver furniture to customers when requested. The Déjà vu shop is also short of volunteers for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. There is flexibility to volunteer all day, mornings, or afternoons. Qualifications include learning simple cash register, ability to walk up and down stairs, sort donations, lift 10 pound bags and boxes, and greet customers.
