SUMMARY
METHIONINE ABSORPTION KINETICS OF THE GROWING PIG
Growing pigs, bearing permanent portal fistulae,
and small canulae in theduodenum,
were fed dietscontaining
starch,herring meal,
minerals and vitamins(r o8o
mg ofmethionine) ; 5
6
0
mg of 35S DL methionine(about
160 fLCu)
wereinjected
in the duodenum 15to 20minutes after thebeginning
of the meal.Samples
ofportal
blood were taken at different timesby
meansof an aminoacid
analyzer
and a Packard flowanalyzer
in order to estimate free amino acid con-tent, and to measure the
radioactivity
of free methionine. The free methionine content of theportal
blood was veryhigh
15 minutes after theinjection,
and decreased to thefasting
levelabout 6 hours after the meal. The
specific radioactivity
of blood methionine wasalways
muchlower than that of the
injected methionine,
and decreased morequickly
than the methionine content of theblood ;
thisprobably
means that both free methionine andprotein
boundingested
methionine were absorbed very soon after the
meal,
but that theabsorption
ofmethionine, coming
from thedigestion
ofproteins,
continued for a ratherlong
time.ESTIMATION

Grâce à l’utilisation d’un
régime semi-purifié,

exclusivement d’une farine dehareng

il a été montré que la thréonineconstitue, après

THREONINE NEEDS OF THE FEMALE PIG BETWEEN 20 TO
50
KG LIVE WEIGHTUsing
asemi-purified
diet with 10 p. 100protein
from aNorwegian herring meal, supple-
mented
by
a free amino acidmixture,
we have found that, as alimiting
factor of fishprotein,
threonine is second to methionine.
However,
at thisprotein level, only
femalesrespond favourably
to threonine
supplementation,
the amino acid needs of castrated malesbeing slightly
lower.By adding increasing
doses of L-threonine to this diet( 0 , 04 ,

we determinedthe
optimum
level of amino acid for thegrowth
of femalepigs

The estimate of the threonine
