Within families, the tradition is practised by family members, boys and girls. Assyk Games are transmitted from generation to generation and attribute a strong feeling of cultural identity and shared heritage to the concerned communities in Kazakhstan.
B. Participation of communities, groups, practitioners and bearers of the element in the process of inventory-making and drafting ICH nomination file
For the purpose of inventory-making of the ICH element of Kazakhstan "Kazakh Traditional Assyk Games", its inscription on the National ICH Register ofKazakhstan and nomination of the element on the UNESCO Representative List of the ICH of Humanity the following measures and activities were carried out by the members of the National Committee on the Safeguarding ofiCH:
In Kazakhstan, the public attention was brought to popularization of a decaying tradition of games with Assyks already in the late 1990s. Because of that, a decision was made to organize tournaments in cities and towns in different regions of Kazakhstan, and to widely cover them in press and mass media. In order to obtain the consent of the latest tournaments' participants, a survey was conducted. The result of this survey was the support of the community on the matter of nomination of this element to the National ICH Register and the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
During the preparation of the nomination, Sabira Kulsariyeva and Zhomart Sabyrzhanov, the vice-president of the "Assyk Atu" National Federation, have organized and conducted a series of meetings with different groups in the cities of Astana and Almaty in 2012. In the course of these meetings, the proposal of the nomination of this element to the National ICH Register and the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was discussed as well. The proposal was met with support and approval. During the meetings, it was also put on the agenda to discuss who to consider the community concerned with the element. The groups
unanimously expressed their opinion that all of the Kazakhstan's population is in one way or another concerned with this element, because every individual is or has been either a player, a witness to games with Assyks, or has collected Assyks for children.
In addition a series of public interviews were initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, "Kazakhstan" TV Channel and "Assyk Atu"
National Federation on the matter of nominating children folk games with Assyks to the UNESCO Representative List. Positive reflection of public opinions was recorded on a separate DVD attached to present nomination dossier.
6. Description of the element
On the whole territory of Kazakhstan from ancient times, games were common in "assyks'',
"alchiks» (kaz. "asyq" - tal us bone of sheep). As a rule, games with assyk belong to the category of traditional children's games. Youth and adults were also involved to play these games.
Each player has a "Saka", which is typically selected from the largest Assyks to shoot other ones, it is often dyed in bright colours. Players stained assyk in its own individual color. Often in deepening pits of "saka" poured lead to weight bits.
In all games in Assyk focus is on the position occupied by a bone thrown in the game. There are four positions of Assyks "alshy" - when bone rests on the flat part of the recess up, "taika" (
"taiki") - when the bone rests on the flat part of the convex side up, "shic" ( "shik") - the bone lying on lateral plane drawn side up, "buch" ( "buq") -a bone also lies on the lateral plane, but the convex side up. At the beginning of the game is determined by the order of drop - on the situation in which they throw "saka". Some games do not require special skills; they win the one who has a bone on a shot from the combination that could not be repeated by another player. In this case, the winner takes the stake put up for bone. In all games winner takes one or more bone loser.
7. Modes of transmission
Today, as in earlier days, at first boys of younger age are passive observers of the game of elder boys for a while. Elder boys and parents explain younger ones the rules of the game assyk and teach them to shoot and throw assyk rightly. Sometimes elders help younger ones to master the skills needed in the game. Younger boys usually train playing with themselves or with the same inexperienced players. When the younger boys realize that they got needed skills and could play together with the elder boys, they ask to include them to play. If the elders consider that younger ones learned the rules of the game then they include them to the number of players and permit them to play on the same footing.
Another traditional way of transmission is numerous radio and TV documentaries broadcasted on the element with the purpose of attracting children to play Assyks and aquainting people with their cultural heritage. Children have opportunity to chat in Internet, create groups in social networks, organize associations and actively involve in regional and national competitions.
