étonnée du calme revenu, s’était presque
assoupie. Po u r un peu elle se serait laissée
aller au doux farnien te d’an tan. Mais, —
hélas! soupirent peut-être d’aucuns, au fond
de leur cœur, — les tem ps ne sont plus à
ces molles habitudes! On ne soutient sa ré
putation de ville d’avenir, que par un esprit
persévérant d’initiative\ et d’entreprise.
Les intelligences et les volontés actives
se sont donc groupées; de leur choc un peu
rude, l’idée a jailli comme une flam me vive;
elle a consumé toutes les oppositions, les si
et les mais des craintifs et des paresseux;
elle a fondu ensemble les propositions di
verses, en un m étal homogène et malléable
qui à pris forme. E t m ain ten a n t l’œ uvre et

là, réalisée, palpable, comme une belle s ta tu e
a u x lignes harm onieuses et robustes, faite
pour le plaisir des yeu x et l’élévation de
l’esprit.
Consciente des critiques q u ’elle pourra
sousciter, mais confiante aussi dans l’utilité
de l’effort accepté et accompli, Brigue l’offre,
cette œuvre, au pays to u t entier, sans vaine
osten tatio n et sans fausse modestie, comme
un tém oignage de ce que p euvent accomplir
les qualités essentielles des races fortes, la
hardiesse dans la conception et la ténacité
dans l’exécution.
Aussi bien, cette exposition est-elle vrai
m en t le fru it de la collaboration de to u tes
les énergies et de to u tes les bonnes volontés.
Les comités locaux en ont réglé l’organisa
tion, les exposants la créent p ar leur travail

B rig verdankt seine Entwicklung nicht in letzter Linie seiner bevorzugten geographischen Lage, die es in alter und neuer Zeit zu einem w ichtigen Ver kehrszentrum gestaltete.

E in es d e r ä lte s te n B a u d e n k m ä le r B rigs, d e r im J a h r e 1304 e r b a u te a lte A n to n iu ssp ita l in d e r obern B ü r g s c h a f t, is t ebenso se h r Z e u g e h ie f ü r w ie das w e it ins L a n d h in au s ra g e n d e dreitU rm ige S tockalperschloss, das d e r F r e i h e r r K a s p a r von S to c k a ip e r im 17. J a h r h u n d e r t e r b a u e n liess, w on e b en ihm n och G e ld in H ü lle und F ü lle blieb, um auc h auf dem Simplon und in G ondo H ospizien zu e r ric h te n u n d den G ru n d zu dem K o lle g iu m von B r i g zu legen.
D ie in den J a h r e n 1801 bis 1805 von N apoleon e rb a u te S im p lo n stra sse e r le ic h te r te den V e r k e h r m it dem b e n a c h b a r te n O b e rita lie n um vieles und v e r m e h rte die H a n d e lsb e z ie h u n g e n , die dem g esa m te n O b e rw a llis zu n u tz e kam en.
D e r M e n sc h en g eist w o llte es a b e r d a m it n ic h t b e w e n d en lassen und auc h N a p o le o n s R u h m als S tra sse n - b a u e r b e g a n n zu erb le ich en als das P ro b le m des Sim- p lo n-D urclistichs n ic h t m e h r zu r R u h e kom m en w olllte. A nlässlich d e r I n a u g u r a tio n des e rste n B a h n h o fe s von B r i g im J a h r e 1878, an d e r als V e r t r e t e r des B u n d e s ra te s N u m a D ro z teilnahm , e r k lä r te d er franz. G e sa n d te H a r c o u r t « qu ’il n ’y a u r a it bien tô t plus des A lpes » ! F a s t d re issig J a h r e s p ä te r k o n n te B u n d e s p rä s i d e n t F o r r e r am B a n k e t t d e r S im p lo n fe ie r (1906) in L a u s a n n e sag e n :
« M it S ta u n e n und B e w u n d e r u n g blicken w ir auf das R ie s e n w e r k d e r T e c h n ik , w e lc h es an R a s c h h e it des B a u ’s, in U e b e r w in d u n g u n v o rs e h b a re r S c h w ie r ig k e i ten, an w ir k s a m e r F ü r s o r g e f ü r d e r A r b e ite r L eben und G e s u n d h e it alles B ish e rig e w e it h in te r sich lä sst» .

D ie beiden g ro ssen T u n n e lb a u te n haben B r i g zu einem b e d e u te n d e n i n t e r n a tio n a le n E is e n b a h n - K n o te n p u n k t g e m a c h t u n d m ä c h tig z u r E n tw i c k l u n g d e r k le i nen S ta d t b e ig e tr a g e n , die i h r W e ic h b ild in w e n ig e n J a h r e n b e d e u te n d e r w e i t e r t hat.
M it d er äu sse rn E n t w i c k l u n g ist a b e r auch die in n ere H a n d in H a n d g e g a n g e n : d er B au des neuen im J a h r e 1908 eröffneten K re is s p ita le s u n d d e rje n ig e eines allen h y g ie n is c h e n E r f o rd e rn is s e n e n ts p re c h e n den Schulhauses. D ie neu e B a h n h o f s tr a s s e t r u g n ic h t w e n ig dazu bei, um das S ta d tb ild zu verschönern.
H a t d e r S im plonbau viele I t a l i e n e r bei uns h e i misch w e rd e n lassen, h ab e n sich seit dem B au d e r L ü ts c h b e r g b a h n m anche D e u ts c h s c h w e iz e r d a u e rn d in B r ig nie d e rg e la sse n . Z u einem schönen T eile kam en sie aus dem b e n a c h b a r te n B ern b iet. So is t es denn auch begreiflich, dass B r i g h e u te eine eig en e p r o te s ta n tisc h e P f a r r e i und ein kleines freu n d lic h es G o tte s h a u s b esitzt.
A uch die L e h r- und E rz ie h u n g s -A n s ta lte n B r i g ’s h a b e n m it d e r n e u e n E n t w ic k lu n g S c h r itt g e h a lte n , indem sie sow o h l n a c h in n en als n a c h aussen e r w e i t e r t und v e r g r ö s s e r t w u rd e n .
D a s C ollegium S p ir itu s S anctus, an dem W e l t p r ie s te r u n d L a ie n als L e h r e r w irk e n , u m fasst h e u te eine d re ik la ssig e R ealsch u le , ein h u m a n istisc h e s G y m nasium und einen z w e ijä h r ig e n p h ilosophischen K u r s m it e id g en ö ssisch e r M a tu ritä ts p rü f u n g . Von den e h r w ü rd ig e n S c h w e s te rn des U r s u lin e n k lo s te rs w ird das I n s t i t u t St. U rs u la g e le ite t, in dem die L e h r a m ts k a n d id a tin n e n des O b e rw a llis h e r a n g e b ild e t w e rden. D ie F a b r ik in d u s tr ie h a t in B r i g auch in n e u e s te r
Z eit, tr o tz d e m es zu einem b e d e u te n d e n V e rk eh rs- z e n tr u m g e w o rd e n ist, n ic h t s t a r k F u s s g efasst. D e r g ro sse V e r k e h r sp ielt sich auf dem B a h n h o f ab. Das a lte B r i g is t h e u te v ie lle ic h t s tille r und einsam er g e w o rd e n als z u r Z eit, da die S c h w e iz e rp o st noch ü b e r den Sim plon und bis n a c h P a lla n z a fuhr.
So v erw eilen denn u n z ä h lig e F r e m d e auch h e u te noch g e r n e ein p a a r S tu n d e n o d e r T a g e in dem alten B rig , eli’ sie d u rc h den T u n n e l fahren, nac h den H ö h e n des Sim plons ziehe n o d e r von d o rt w ie d e r z u r ü c k keh re n . E in z ig sc h ö n e T a g e b ie te n in B r i g f ü r g e w ö h n lich die n e b e lfre ie n H e rb s tw o c h e n , in denen das gelb e L a u b von d e r G lis e r A llee fä llt u n d das H e r d e n g e lä u te ü b e r die M a tte n k lin g t. W o h l dem, dessen F e r i e n in solchen T a g e n im m e r n och n ic h t zu E n d e sind und d e r Z e it h a t zu S p a z ie r g ä n g e n nac h dem idyllischen B rig e rb e rg , n a c h d e r a l t e h r w ü rdige n, auc h f ü r den K u n s tf r e u n d s e h e n s w ü rd ig e n K ir c h e nac h Glis, wo auch d e r F r ie d h o f m it einzelnen p r ä c h tig e n G r a b d e n k m älern zu stillem V e rw e ile n ladet, ä m F r ü h l i n g a b e r g e n ie s s t B r i g den k o s tb a r e n Vorteil, sich in n ä c h s te r N ä h e des L a g o M a g g io re zu befinden, an dessen U fe rn Cam elien u n d Mimosen blühen, sobald d e r F ö h n ü b e r

I n ihm sp ie g e lt sich seine m a r k a n te P e r s ö n lic h k e it w ie d e r : seine h e ilig e L iebe zum W a lliserla n d e, sein w e it e r u n te rn e h m e n d e r Geist, sein Sinn f ü r W is s e n s c h a f t und K u n st, seine g e n ia le Be g a b u n g als H a n d e ls h e r r und G ro ssk a u fm an n .
D as S to c k alp ersc h lo ss ist nich t auf einm al in sei nem h e u tig e n U m fa n g e r s te llt w orden. Es ist e n t stan d en aus d er V e rb in d u n g des S ta m m h a u ses (domus t r i u m regum , dem u n te r n Teile), d er alten S uste und einem K o m p le x e k le in e r e r B a u te n , die sich s ta d tw ä rts. an die S u ste a n g e le h n t h a tte n . U e b e r den B au des Schlosses fehlen uns je g lic h e D o k u m en te ; das Stockal- p erarc h iv , das ü b e r z w a n z ig dickleibige F o lio b ä n d e von R e c h n u n g e n K a s p a r S to c k alp ers e n th ä lt, in denen g e r a d e z u m inutiös das K le in s te a u f g e z e ic h n e t ist, e n t h ä l t n u r einige u n b e d e u te n d e A n g a b en ü b e r G o ld sc h m ie d e a rb e ite n u. a. S to c k a ip e r w o llte ansch ein en d nicht, das diese R e c h n u n g e n den P a tr io te n b e k a n n t w ü rd e n . E r w ir d sie in die V e r b a n n u n g m itg e n o m men h aben, wo sie v e rlo r e n g in g e n . W i r w issen nur, dass d e r B a u in den 3 0er J a h r e n des 17. J a h r h u n d e r ts a u s g e f ü h r t w o rd e n is t und dass S to c k a ip e r s ch riftlich den B au p lan au fsetzte, dam it im F a lle v o rz e itig e n A blebens seine N a c h fo lg e r g e n ü g e n d o rie n tie r t seien ü b e r seine B a u a b sic h te n . D as Schloss ist ein H e r r e n h au s im italie n isch en Stil. Seine einfachen, a b e r g u te n P ro p o rtio n e n , die w u c h tig e n fe n ste rre ic h e n F assa d e n , die leichten B o g e n g ä n g e und A rk a d e n aus gelbem Tuffstein, das g ro sse mit sc h w e re n S c h ie fe rp la tte n g e d e c k te H a u p td a c h , die drei m ä c h tig e n T ü rm e m it den zw ie b elfö rm ig en K u p p e ln , das I n n e r e des H a u ses m it seinen w e ite n K o rr id o re n , die auf b eiden S ei te n von g e rä u m ig e n , ho h en Z im m e rn und w e iten S älen eingeschlossen sind, w e rd e n als h o c h w e rtig e s K u l t u r d o k u m e n t s te ts die B e w u n d e r u n g aller K e n n e r erreg e n .
D en feinen, em pfä n g lic h en K u n s ts in n S to c k alp ers e n td e c k t m an im p rä c h tig e n , t e r r a s s e n f ö r m ig a n g e le g te n G a rte n , den dre i w u n d e rv o lle n E isen p o rta le n , d er h e u te b e r e its w e it ü b e r 100 P o r t r ä t e zählenden S am m lu n g im A hne n sa ale, den dre i sclrweren S ilb e r gem äld e n aus d e r Schule Cellinis, die z u r K a p e lle gehören. Diese ist das seltene B eispiel eine
Doppel-kapelle, die das S ta m m h a u s m it dem neuen W o h n haus du rc h zw ei h ö c h st w irk u n g sv o lle , b r ü c k e n a r tig e rste llte B o g e n g ä n g e verbindet.
«W em es v e r g ö n n t ist, das Schloss und seine G e sch ich te n ä h e r k e n n e n zu lernen, und wem sich das A rc h iv erschliesst, d e r b e k o m m t einen Begriff, w a s e ig e n tlic h ein K a u fm a n n und H a n d e ls h e r r in f r ü h e ren Z eiten w a r, und man ist g e r n e b e r e it h ie r a c h tu n g sv o ll den H u t zu ziehen. R e v o lu tio n sp e rio d e und den g rossen K orsen, d e r b e re its B efehl g e g e b e n h a tte , das K o lle g zu r K a s e r n e u m z u g e s ta lte n (d a h e r die S chiess-S charten an d er R i n g m a u e r des Hofes) ; man d en k e an den u nseligen S o n d e rb u n d s k rie g m it seinen F o lg e n f ü r W a llis 1847 usw.
S eit B eg in n d e r f ü n f z ig e r J a h r e leiten W e l t p r i e s t e r das I n t e r n a t . Im J a h r e 1834 w u r d e das eig en tlich e S ch ulgebäude , d er S üdw estflügel a n g e b a u t und 1922 d er N o rd o sttra k t. D a m it ist d e r g e p la n te Vollausbau ein b e d e u te n d e s S tü c k g e f ö r d e r t w o rd e n . — I s t noch ein M eh reres n ö tig ? Allgemeines
F ü r das J a h r 1922 w a r eine G e w e rb e -A u s s te llu n g f ü r den B e z irk B r ig g e p la n t g ew esen. D a b ei liefen je d o c h so viele G e su c h e von G e w e rb e tr e ib e n d e n aus dem g a n z e n O b e rw a llis ein, dass das d e r z e itig e O r g a n is a tio n s k o m ite e den b e re c h tig te n E n tsc h lu ss fasste, den G e d a n k e n ein er B e z irk s - A u s s te llu n g fa lle n zu lassen und eine grosse, den g e sa m te n deu tsch e n K a n tonsteil u m fassende G e w e r b e a u s s te llu n g zu v e r a n s ta l ten, d u r c h g e f ü h r t vom H a n d w e r k e r - und G e w e r b e verein des B ezirk e s Brig.
Z w e c k und Z iel d ieser A u s s te llu n g finden w i r im R e g ie m e n te s e h r schön w ie f o lg t u m schriebe n : (§ 1) Sie soll H a n d w e rk , G e w e rb e und I n d u s tr ie des O b e r w a llis z u r D a r s te llu n g b rin g e n , ein ü b ersic h tlich e s B ild d e r L e is tu n g s f ä h ig k e it sein er B e w o h n e r bieten, z u r g e g e n s e itig e n B e le h r u n g und zu r W ü r d ig u n g d er eig en e n K r a f t dienen, dem V olke die B e d e u tu n g sei n er w irts c h a ftlic h e n L e is tu n g s f ä h ig k e it vor A ugen führen, diese fö rd e rn und den A bsatz d er P r o d u k tio n heben.

§ 1. — D ie O b e rw a llis e r H a n d w e rk -, G e w erb e - und I n d u s trie - A u s s te llu n g in B r i g w i r d vom H a n d w e rk e r- und G e w e rb e v e re in des B e z irk e s B r i g durch- g e fü h rt.
