states that he was agent voyer (road surveyor) in Mâcon (France). This introduction is dated 12 November 1884.

We also know that Tissot published a table of abscissas and ordinates in 1874, appar-ently in order to help for the drawing of roads [5].

Tissot’s table of logarithms

Tissot’s table of logarithms is in manuscript form and held at the library of the Institut in Paris (Ms 923). The manuscript was donated by the author.

The main table spans 1000 pages, each page having dimensions w ×h = 17 cm×35 cm. Each page gives the logarithms of 100 values.

Logarithms of numbers

It appears that Tissot gives the values of v = bn for n = 1 to 100000 and b = 1010000001 .

For instance, for the value n = 10001, Tissot gives v = 1.258955, the correct value being 1.258954.

If we assume that the first column of Tissot’s table contains fractions of hundred thousands, the previous relation can also be read as log 1.258955 ≈ 0.10001. In other words, Tissot’s table is basically a table of antilogarithms. Tissot’s table is of course also reminiscent of Bürgi’s table [2]. Bürgi built a table of the values 108·bn/10with b = 1.0001

and 1 ≤ bn/10 ≤ 10. This connection, however, is certainly fortuitous.1

Tissot did not explain how he computed the values of bn, but it is likely that he

computed some pivot values.

Existing tables of logarithms, such as Babbage’s [1], gave for instance the logarithms to seven places, so that he would have found

log 66599 = 4.8234677 (1)

log 66600 = 4.8234742 (2)

log 66601 = 4.8234808 (3)

A linear interpolation would then give

log 66599.35 = 4.82347 (4)

log 66600.88 = 4.82348 (5)

and the values on the left are approximations of the values of b82347 and b82348:

Tissot may have used a combination of techniques in order to obtain a better accuracy.

of the angle column lists the angles α from 0◦350 to 5◦440, minute by minute, and they are put next to the number 100 sin α. For instance, 1◦210 is put next to 2.355976, on line 37217.

For α from 5◦450 to 90◦, the second part of the angle column should be used, and α is given next to 10 sin α. For instance, 5◦450 is given under 1.001890, on line 82

2.3

Proportional parts

A table of proportional parts is given on each page in order to facilitate interpolations. On the first page, the greatest difference of N in the last digit is 23, and this difference is divided in 100 parts. On the last page, the greatest difference is 230, and this difference is likewise divided in 100 parts. On the last page, interpolating the value corresponding to 99901.37, for instance, is done by adding the value for 99901 which is 9.977230 and the proportional part 85, so that in the end we have 9.977230 + 0.000085 = 9.977315.
