Important Prospect

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON 'ANTARCTICA, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND THE FUTURE', TO BE HELD IN THE UNIVERSITY OF GENEVA, SWITZERLAND,

DURING 23 & 24 APRIL 1992

* Organized jointly by the Geneva International Peace Research Institute (GIPRI) and the International Academy of Environment, this propitious Conference will be held in the Lecture Theatre, Science II, University of Geneva.

An eminent forum will consider the achievements and future prospects of Antarctic science, environmental pro-tection under the new Protocol, due regulation of tourism, and the problem of over-fishing.

This event will be of concern to a wide range of specialists — not only scientists but also many involved in public administration, etc. It will be an outstanding oppor-tunity for due consideration of Antarctica as a whole. The Conference fee will be 150 Swiss francs, or 25 Swiss francs for registered students who are particularly en-couraged to attend. There will be a poster exhibition and simultaneous interpretation into English and French.

Speakers are planned to include Dr David Drewry, Director of the British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, England; Dr Roger Gendrin, Director of the French Insti-tute for Polar Research & Technology, Paris; Dr John Heap, until recently of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, London, England; Dr Gotthilf Hempel, Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremen, Germany; Dr Karl-Hermann Kock, of the Institut fur Seefischerei, Hamburg, Germany; Professor Bernard Stauffer, of the Physics Institute, Berne, Switzerland; and Dr Bernard Stone-house, Editor of Polar Record, Cambridge, England. The Conference will be opened by the Rt Hon. Lord Shackleton, son of the late Sir Ernest Shackleton of Antarctic fame, who is expected to be present throughout. On the first day of the Conference, a session on the so-called 'Ozone Hole' will be added to those of the speakers already announced, while on the second afternoon there will be a round-table with Intergovernmental Organi-zations and NGOs having relations with Antarctica. Lord Shackleton's participation will be singularly propitious as, following Arctic experience in his youth, he has long been active in Antarctic affairs; he has been to the South Pole, and led a faction in the House of Lords that recently persuaded the British Government inter alia to invest in a new icebreaker for Antarctica. Further information about the Conference may be obtained from the undersigned.
