CALL FOR FIELD RESEARCH PROPOSALS ON THE HISTORY OF MEDICAL RESEARCH IN

NIGERIA

Medical research, development, and memory in colonial and postcolonial Nigeria

We are pleased to announce a second research training and proposal development seminar on the history of medical research in Nigeria, to be held at the Dean’s Seminar Room, Faculty of General Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka from 17th to 21st September 2012. This seminar is open to twelve (12) doctoral postgraduate students and recent postdoctoral scholars (PhD awarded after 1st January 2008) from Nigerian universities. It will provide training in the theory and methodology of history of medicine, together with an opportunity to discuss and develop a research proposal for submission to a peer-reviewed competition for four grants of to cover a four-month period of field and archival research in early 2013.

Applications for a place at the seminar should be made to admin@ifra-nigeria.org by June 18th, 2012. The application should consist of i) a biographical brief including, name, address, contact details (e-mail and phone), date of birth, and educational details; ii) a statement explaining how the seminar and resulting project would fit with the candidate’s work; and iii) a concise proposal comprising title of proposed research, a description of the main research question, and an indication of the main area, institution, and/or archive under scrutiny.

This proposal should also indicate an awareness of methodology and theoretical approach to be used, and evidence of the feasibility of the research from the point of view of planning and budget. We especially encourage applications from historians and allied disciplines, but humanities and social science scholars proposing historical projects are also warmly invited to apply. Applications are welcome from participants from all across Nigeria, and a stipend to cover costs of attendance is available for successful applicants.

The seminar is jointly organized by Dr. John Manton, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Dr. Gérard Chouin, IFRA-Nigeria, with funding from the British Academy and IFRA-Nigeria.
