2Case Study: : Aquifer System Yrenda-Toba-Tarijeno
• In the 3 countries there are studies carried out at different scales, which define some aspects of the regional geology, hydrogelogy even the identification of the hydrochemical characteristics with the use of isotopic hydrology, but only in some sectors of the system.
• An integration of the existent information is necessary in order to identify the reservoir geometry and to establish the mechanisms of their operation so that, on this basis, to generate the plans for the regional development .
Americas Transboundary Aquifers
Improvements for the future
• Improvement of the scientific technical knowledge of the aquifer system
• Groundwater Management
• Legal and Institutional understanding for groundwater management
• People participation, education and communication
Location and aquifer system characteristics• Because of the great geologic heterogeneity of the silts that contains the water and the spatial variability of the quality of the water, the quantity of people that would be favored by its utilization (should be evaluated with more security), is considered bigger than 500.000.
• In some sectors, as in the area of paleoterrace of the alluvial cone of the Pilcomayo river, some restrictions exist for human use and watering, due to the high salinity contained in the shallow aquifers, located down to 140 meters deep.
• The hydrogeologic potential of the aquifer is even not very well-known into a large part of the Bolivian Chaco. To be able to make recommendations of sustainable uses of the resource, it is necessary to deepen the knowledge so much with relation to the recharge volumes like those of exploitation of the aquifers.
• In Paraguay it is designated as Aquifer “YRenda” (Y: place, Rendá: water) to the complex of groundwater constituted for confined and semiconfined levels housed in silts of the Tertiary and Quaternary.
• In Argentina a great heterogeneity exists in the water quality and in the productivity of the different aquifer reservoires that compose the system.
