Committee on governance and popular participation to meet in Addis

ECA Press Release No. 13/2011

Addis Ababa, 01 March 2011 (ECA) - The Committee on Governance and Popular Participation will hold a two-day consultation, from 9-10 March 2011 to review the 2010/2011 work of the United Nations Economic Commission (ECA) in the area of governance and public administration and the proposed activities programmed for 2012/2013. Approximately 60 participants representing government, private sector and civil society from across Africa will attend the consultations.

In advance of the Committee Meeting, ECA will hold a briefing for the African Diplomatic Corps on the preparations in place. The briefing scheduled for Thursday 3 March 2011will also discuss the priorities of the governance and public Administation priorities for 2012/2013.

The meeting will provide suggestions on how ECA could improve its working relations with regional, sub-regional and national institutions, including non-state actors and development partners to better enhance Africa’s capacity and capability in the areas of work carried out by the Governance and Public Administration Division.

Participants will assess the impact and effectiveness of Civil Society Organizations and Non-governmental Organizations with respect to their participation in promoting governance in Africa. They will also discuss progress on the implementation of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM); and progress on Mutual Review of Development Effectiveness 2010.

The conclusions and recommendations of the meeting will enable ECA to enhance its working modalities through analytical work, advisory services, technical assistance to member States, training and sensitization programs at regional, sub-regional and national levels. In addition, ECA intends to lay partiular emphasis on issues of participatory governance and development, at central, local and community levels.
