A remark about M¨untz spaces

Dirk Werner

Wojtaszczyk [3] recently proved the following theorem.

Theorem 1 If X is a closed subspace of C[0,1] such that each f X is continuously differentiable on [0,1), thenX is isomorphic to a subspace ofc0.

The proof to follow is clearly modelled after Wojtaszczyk’s proof, but some- what more pedestrian. Let us show:

Theorem 2 Under the assumptions of Theorem1,X is almost isometric to a subspace ofc. That is, for every ε >0 there is an operatorJε: X →csuch that

(1−ε)f≤ Jεf ≤ f ∀f ∈X.

Proof. The idea is to define Jεf = f(sn)

for a suitably chosen sequence in [0,1).

Letε >0. For 0< a <1, the operator

D: X →C[0, a], f →f|[0,a]

is well-defined and has a closed graph; therefore it is continuous. Thus, there is someK(a)>0 such that

0≤t≤asup |f(t)| ≤K(a)f ∀f ∈X.

We now fix a sequence 0 =a0 < a1 < a2 < . . . <1 converging to 1. Pick points 0 =s0< s1< . . . < sn1 =a1 < sn1+1 < . . . < sn2 =a2< . . .in such a way that (n0= 0)

sj+1−sj ε

K(ak+1) fornk≤j < nk+1,

i.e., two consecutive points of (sn) in [ak, ak+1] are at mostε/K(ak+1) apart.

Put Jεf = f(sn)

n; then Jε maps X into c with Jε1. On the other hand, let f X and s [0,1), sayak s ≤ak+1. Ifsm [ak, ak+1] is the member of (sn) closest tos, then

|f(s)| ≤ |f(s)−f(sm)|+|f(sm)|

sup

ak≤t≤ak+1

|f(t)| |s−sm|+|f(sm)|

K(ak+1)f ε

and therefore

(1−ε)f≤ Jεf ∀f ∈X. 2

Remarks. (1) If [0,1) is replaced by [0,1] in Theorem 1, then X is finite- dimensional.

(2) Actually Wojtaszczyk’s proof is more general in that he only assumes ex- istence offon [0,1), but not its continuity; we are using the local boundedness off.

(3) Natural examples of spaces satisfying the assumptions of Theorem 1 are the M¨untz spaces: If 0 = λ0 < λ1 < λ2 < . . . is an increasing sequence of integers with

n=11/λn <∞, then every function f in the closed linear span of the monomialstλn (nN0) inC[0,1] has a power series representation

f(t) =

n=0

cntλn

which converges on [0,1). This is a result due to Clarkson and Erd˝os, see [1, p. 350].

(4) There is also anLp-version of Theorem 2: If X is a closed subspace of Lp[0,1] such that each f X is continuously differentiable on [0,1), then X is almost isometric to a subspace ofp. The proof is similar to the one above.

Again, M¨untz spaces serve as natural examples. (This also follows from [2].)
