Academic Session : Joint Ini*a*ve of UIC and “Chaire Gare”
This call of papers is launched by the corporate Chair "Gares", a teaching and research partnership of SNCF and Ecole des) designed to link the academic research community with trasport industry, and by IntenaBonal Union of railways.
The communicaBons will be presented in a parallel session designed as a part of NextstaBon 2015, the staBon's managers and railway companies global event organized under the authority of InternaBonal Union of Railways in Marrakech (Morocco) on 21 and 22 th october 2015.

The selected communicaBons will be edited on the website of the NextstaBon 2015. A\er the Congress, the scienBfic commiQee will start the ediBon process in a peer review in transport and planning studies.

Context and argument
In many countries, railway sta2ons emerge as focal point for urban projects.
Important investments go along with larger urban regenera2on projects. The new a<rac2veness of the sta2on may be explained by the recogni2on of its architectural and patrimonial values of sta2ons (especially when they are old and centric), but also by their growing importance as integrated transit hubs.
The fast expansion of easier and smarter connec2ons from railway to a wide range of mobility systems (including plane, metro and light rail, buses and regional trains, carsharing and bikesharing systems) modifies deeply the spa2al organisa2on of railway hubs, as well as their governance, their management and the final customer experience.
Designing and managing intermodal sta2ons remains a very complex task, involving technological processes, but also inducing be<er coordina2on between sta2on managers and diversified partners (retail developers and services, metropolitan powers, neighbourhood interests ...).
A way of addressing the future of intermodal mobility consist in analysing, firstly, the way by which intermodality reshapes at the same 2me the place and the traveller experience. Hence, the first part of the call for papers focuses on the management of sta2on as a node of transport. A second part of the call ques2ons the sta2on and its surrounding (urban places, neighbourhood) as singular places in metropolitan systems.
Purposes of the academic session, criteria for papers selec*on
Nextsta2on Congres is a global event dedicated to sta2ons management, and represent an opportunity to mobilize the scien2fic community and to discuss the work of researchers in a wider context.The call is open to academics in many disciplines (architecture, geography, urbanism, economy, ingeneering studies, etc.), from PhD scholars to confirmed researchers.
Firstly, it aims to draw a state of the art concerning intermodal sta2ons on an interna2onal basis. In this purpose, it should address case studies o coming from all types of countries and towns.
Second the public of the panel welcomes academics and non academic people (sta2on's managers may be part of the public of this session), thus enriching debates.
Thirdly, a final synthesis of the papers, including the results of debates, will be presented in the plenary conclusions of the Congress as a scien2fic contribu2on (white paper).
Papers may connect with following five themes
• Sta*ons in urban planning
The crea2on or redevelopment of sta2ons gives the opportunity to rethink the place of railway infrastructure in the town and in the urban planning : integra2ng the building in urban space and landscape, crea2ng centrality, trying to mi2gate the discon2nui2es produced by trackways giving room for new public spaces.
-‐> What are the problems raised by the inser*on of a sta*on in urban planning programmes and solu*ons proposed ?
• Sta*on as new values for urban assets
Urban intensifica2on around railway hubs generates proximity and a<rac2vity effects in the way housing, jobs and services are localised. It oQen involves many economic and social processes of change, not only in sta2on’s neighbourhood, but at a larger metropolitan scale.
-‐> How does sta*ons’ projects ar*culate with land use modifica*ons and real estate developement ? What kind of poli*cal, economical and financial organiza*ons are needed to hold such projects ?
• Sta*ons as intermodal hubs
Sta2ons offers a best urban accessibility when they are used as a key part of a trip chain involving other mass transit systems (bus) as well as with individual mobility solu2ons (bike and bikeshare programs, walking solu2ons).
-‐> What strategies foster mul*modality, in and around sta*ons ?
• Sta*ons as technological hotspots
The development of large hubs implies a drama2c reconfigura2on of places and development of new artefacts and soQware. This architecturall and technological "refurbishment" provides great expecta2ons of be<er quality (security, comfort and 2me saving), but also decep2ons.
-‐> What are the strategies of implementa*on (among operators) and adapta*on (among users) to this new materials ?
• Sta*ons as mobility systems
Railway hubs hold perpetually moving crowds, with different configura2ons of speed and moving pa<erns. Needs to foster security, comfort, and efficacity jus2fy a be<er understanding of users i2neraries and behaviours.
