SUMMARY
FEEDING VAI,U! OF BARLEY IN DIETS OF PIGLETS WEANED AT 21 DAYS
Barley
is wellaccepted by piglets
weaned at 35days
and wepreviously
demonstrated that itimproves
health of the animalsreducing
thefrequency
of diarrhoea.The aim of the
present study
was to compare thefeeding
value of 3types
ofbarley (naked barley,
maltedbarley,
normalbarley)
in theearly weaning
diets( 21 days)
of 60piglets
reared onthe floor in pens and of 12
piglets kept
indigestibility
crates.Before the
experiment (table i)
we determined the level of cell wall constituents in thebarley samples :
the lowest level ofcomponents,
determinedby
the aciddetergent (ADF)
and thehighest
starch content was found in naked
barley.
It was shown thatpelleting
of the feed had a favourable effect on the in vitro breakdown of starchby
thepancreatic
fluid ofpiglets.
The
performances
of the animals showed thatbarley
was wellaccepted by piglets
weanedat zi
days,
but that nakedbarley
and maltedbarley
did notsignificantly improve
thegrowth
rateof the animals. On the other
hand,
nakedbarley improved
the feedefficiency
of the dietby
about3 per cent
compared
to the control. Inagreement
with theprevious results,
the meandigestibi- lity
of the crude energy of the feed wasimproved
in dietscontaining
nakedbarley (8g.o
per centversus
8 4 .6
per cent for normalbarley).
Conclusions are drawn as
regards feeding
scales ofpiglets
weaned at 21days
and variation with age(fig. 2 )
of the feedefficiency
isemphasized. Finally,
the resultsclearly
showpelleting
modifies the
barley
starch and thatmalting
does notimprove
the utilization of the feed. On the otherhand,
nakedbarley
is wellaccepted by
the animal and its energy value exceeds that of normalbarley by
about 4.5 per cent.EFFET

RÉSUMÉ
L’efficacité de
l’orge
technologique (trempage
de lacéréale,
ensuite séchée à l’airchaud)
apour effet de réduire la rétention
azotée ;
cette observation est en accord avec la moindre teneur enlysine
totale etdisponible
de cesproduits.
Unecomplémentation
del’orge
par unrégime
riche en
lysine permet
de remédier entièrement à cette insuffisance.- Le
broyage grossier (diamètre
moyen desparticules
o,g-i,i2 mm contre o,3g-o,4!mm)
entraîne une réduction
significative
de l’utilisationdigestive
de la matièreorganique,
de l’azoteet de la
cellulose,
alors que celle de l’extractif non azoté est peu affectée. Mais la rétention d’azote est améliorée par unbroyage
limité et l’efficacité azotéeglobale (N retenu/N ingéré)
del’orge
estfinalement la même.
L’association d’un
broyage grossier
à unsystème
derecyclage
desgrains
nonbroyés (blutage) présente
un intérêttechnique
etéconomique
que lepraticien
ne sauraitnégliger.
SUMMARY
EFFECT OF GRINDING AND HEAT TREATMENT 0!1 THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF MATURE BARLEY GRAIN
FOR GROWING PIGS
The nutritive value of
barley
for thegrowing pig depends
on its fineness ofgrinding,
technolo-gical
treatment and on thequality
of thecomplementary
source ofdietary protein.
Nitrogen
balances anddigestibility
measurement ofdry
mattercomponents
ongrowing pigs (
30 -6 0
kg)
show that :- The
technological
treatment(soaking
of thegrain
and hot-airdrying)
is followedby
adecrease of
nitrogen
retention. Thiscorresponds
to the lower content of total and availablelysine
in the
grain,
and can becompletely
overcomeby
a liberalsupplement
of alysine-riche protein
source.
-
By
coarsegrinding (average
size ofparticles :
o.9-r.2 mmagainst o. 39 -o. 47 ) digestibility
of
organic matter,
crude fiber andnitrogen
issignificantly reduced,
but that of N-free extract remainsunchanged. However,
in this case,nitrogen
retention ofhigher
and theprotein efficiency (retained N/N intake)
isfinally
the same forcoarsely
andfinely ground barley.
The coarse
grinding, together
with arecycling system
ofunground grains,
offer to the feedmanufacturer technical and economical
possibilities
which must be considered.RATIONNEMENT PROGRESSIF DE PORCS
