Summer assignment – 3

rd

grade – June 2020

Teachers: A. Choukri - G. Borisavljevic - S. Brandhof – M-E de Gaultier – Z. Kazakevicius

Dear pupil,

If you’re reading this text, it means you have been asked to complete a work during the summer. No worries, it’s nothing new. The purpose, as you know, is to prepare yourself correctly for the 4th grade.

Through this work, you’ll be given some pieces of advice as well as some assignments to do online.

The first thing you have to know is that the more you immerge yourself in a foreign language, the more familiar that language will sound to your ears. If you follow that logic, you’ll understand that the more you read, write, speak or even hear a language, the better you’ll manage in those several skills. Don’t forget that a language, no matter which one, is a communicative tool. You have to see it as a whole, as a mean you use to pass a message through, even though, it has been divided in four skills...

1. The perfect language learner:

Let’s start with some pieces of advice through a little article. Understand the article and try to adopt the described attitudes during the summer.

A little extra…

We know your generation watches a lot of series on Netflix. If you do so, program your favourite series in OV (= original version) subtitled in English, you’ll be surprised how many new vocabulary words and expressions you’ll learn without even noticing it.

The next video suggests a panel of famous British TV shows you can discover this summer by applying the technique suggested before.

2. Use the internet practise your English skill by skill:

Learning a language, can also happen in a more serious way. If you want to improve your level in one of the four language skills, exercising them on the web in an autodidactic way can be very useful.

Here are some good websites that might help you to do so. Don’t forget that practising your grammar and your vocabulary is also advised. As you know they are considered as “tools” that’ll help you to be more independent to create (by writing or speaking) your own content.

English File:

The authors of your English book “English File” developed a website that helps the students, or pupils like you, to learn English in a more interactive way.

Go on the following link and practise everything you’ve seen this school year.

https://elt.oup.com/student/englishfile/elementary3/?cc=be&selLanguage=en

Once you’re on the website you’ll be able to do some grammar and vocabulary exercises and even work on your pronunciation or watch some Practical English.

Practical English, is a little series created by the authors of English File that follows the adventures of Jenny, an American girl, who accepted a new Job in London.

The category Test Maker allows you to be your own teacher as it helps you to create your own tests. How does it work? Choose the grammar points you would like to be tested on and complete your personal test. Don’t forget to correct yourself at the end.

British Council Teens :

Another interesting website is the one of the “British Council Teens”. It offers you a wide range of exercises for every language skill.

Click on the following link: https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/

Once you’re on the website, choose the skill you would like to work on between:

Speaking, Listening, Reading or Writing.

(5)

choose the level “Elementary A2” and you’re ready to start. If you want to challenge yourself you can always upgrade the level by choosing “B1- Intermediate”…

Testing your “Grammar” and “Vocabulary” is also possible. As this year is your first year of English choose the level “Beginner”. Again, don’t hesitate to challenge yourself by upgrading the level. Once you’re finished, correct yourself and try to understand your mistakes.

My English pages:

As we told you, the web is a magical tool on which you can find a lot of websites to practise Shakespeare’s language. Just like the previous ones, you can find a lot of interesting exercises on “My English pages”. Click on the following link and discover everything the website has to offer.

According to your interests, by clicking on the tab “reading”, find at least five articles to work on. Once you’re finished, correct yourself.

Listen, sing and…. learn with “lyricstraining.com”:

On this website, you can listen to your favourite songs and, at the same time, fill in the missing words in the song lyrics. It will improve your listening skill and your pronunciation but also expand your vocabulary. If you prefer, you can download the app on your telephone.

When you are on this page, enter the song or the artist.

You can even choose your level. Start with Beginner but don’t hesitate to try Intermediate or Advanced.

3. An online dictionary:

As you’re only in your first year of English, it’s impossible to know all the vocabulary words. So, if there’s a word you don’t know, going on the following website might be very helpful. By using it, you’ll notice that depending of the context; the meaning of a word might differ.

Remember, a serious and regular practice on these websites should make you ready
