Préface

Fixed points play a fondamental rôle in several areas of computer science, and the construction and properties of fixed points have been investigated in many different frameworks. The aim of the international workshop Fixed Points in Computer Science, FICS'98 was to provide a forum for researchers to present their results to those mem- bers of the computer science community who study or use the fixed point opération in different fields and formalisms.

The workshop FICS'98, a satellite of MFCS'98, was held in Brno from August 27 to August 29, 1998. This meeting was sponsored by the Masaryk University of Brno and the József Attila University of Szeged. The topics of each of the talks related to fixed points, including the construction and reasoning about properties of fixed points, categorical, metric and ordered fixed point models, recursive types, fixed points in process algebras and process calculi, languages, formai power series and trees, recursion in higher types, the fM calculus and the À calculus.

The scientific program of the workshop consisted of invited lectures given by André Arnold, Jaco W. de Bakker and Yiannis N. Moschovakis, as well as présentations of 15 contributed papers selected by the Program Committee from a total of 23 submissions.

The Program Committee consisted of R. Backhouse, S. L. Bloora, C. Böhm, R. De Nicola, Z. Ésik, P. Freyd, I. Guessarian, D. Kozen, W. Kuich, M. Mislove and R. F. C. Walters.

This special issue contains the full text of 9 of the papers presented at the workshop and a paper by André Arnold related to his invited address.
