The greater part of this publication consists of the reports of the three sub -committees. In addition to the definitions proper, the report of the first sub -committee deals with the registration of live births, infant deaths and foetal deaths, and with the preparation of statistics concerning these. The report of the second sub- committee

considers the various statistical problems arising in connexion with cancer. The third sub -committee's report deals with the problems caused by, aid, the measures required ^by, the application of the new

International Lists of Diseases and Causes of Deaths to hospital statistics. The report of the main committee makes general recommendations on future activities of WHO.

correspondantes. Celui du deuxième sous -comité examine les différents problèmes statistiques que pose.l'étude du cancer, groupés sous les rubriques suivantes: mortalité,. morbidité et enregistrement des _cas, résultats thérapeutiques. Le rapport du troisième sous- comité étudie les problèmes posés et les mesures requises par l'application de la nouvelle nomenclature internationale des maladies et causes de décès au domaine des statistiques hospitalières. Le rapport du comité principal se borne à présenter des recommandations d'ordre général sur l'action future de l'OMS.

Organization between 1948 and 1958 in international health statistics.

The Organization not only collects and publishes health data from all over the world; it also seeks to improve national statistics and statistical services, and to standardize conflicting systems of classification of diseases and deaths, to facilitate comparability.

This publication contains an historical introduction, a review of the problem of collecting reliable and accurate international statistics, and a sketch of some of the specific statistical studies WHO has undertaken.

Prepared for the guidance of national health administrations and of quarantine services, the Weekly Epidemiological Record contains notifications relating to diseases designated "quarantinable" in the International Sanitary Regulations, as well as other information about the application of international sanitary legislation. Notes, based on current statistical data, on the incidence of certain non -

quarantinable diseases are also included whenever their prevalence becomes of international importance.

This work gives the nomenclature to be used in preparing and

publishing morbidity and mortality statistics. It meets the needs not only of vital statistics offices but also of hospitals, clinics, social

The Manual also gives the rules to be followed in selecting the underlying cause of death for deaths due to multiple causes, together with additional instructions, an international form ^of medical

certificate of cause of death, and the text of WHO Regulations

regarding:- nomenclature with respect to diseases and causes of death.

They are intended to ensure greater uniformity and comparability of morbidity and mortality statistics between countries.
