BElgian-NEtherlands software eVOLution symposium

BENEVOL brings together researchers who are working in the field of software evolution and maintenance.

BENEVOL offers an informal forum to meet and to discuss new ideas, important problems, and obtained research results. The 19th edition of BENEVOL was organized and hosted by University of Luxembourg, from 3rd to 4th December 2020. It accepted 7 technical papers.

Technical papers went through a constructive review process by at least 3 members of the Program Com- mittee. We solicited papers in early stages of research, which are still rough around the edges and could benefit from feedback from the community. Technical papers were reviewed by at least three members of the program committee, assessing whether they are within the scope of BENEVOL (i.e., software maintenance and evolution) and meet its quality criteria. The papers part of the proceedings includes the feedback re- ceived during the workshop.

In addition, BENEVOL 2020 featured two keynote talks. Michael Pradel, professor at the University of Stuttgart, gave a talk about neural software analaysis: a way of creating tools for developers by training machine learning models on code samples and then making predictions on unseen code. Benoit Baudry, professor at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, shared his experience and discussed the state of the art of software debloating: the act of removing unnecessary pieces of code from a program. The summaries of their talks are listed in the proceedings.
