1 , INTRODUCTION

The Director-General reported to the Sxecirbive Board at i t s twenty—sixth s e s s i o n on developments i n assistance to the Republic of 七he Congo ( L e o p o l d v i l l e )

EB26.R15 on the subject, i n which i t5 i n t e r a l i a ’ requested 11 the Direc"oor-3eneral to report f u r t h e r to the Executive Board at : t s twenty-seventh s e s s i o n and to the Fourteerrfcli World Health Assembly^ • Developments s i n c e the D i r e c t o r - G e n e r a l reported to the Executive Board i n October i960 are set f o r t h below.

2. PROVISION OF STAFF TO THE CONGO

2.1 Since the beginning of the special assistance to the Congo in July 19б05 29 staff of the Icrld Health Organization have servod in tho Congo for varied periods of time j 11 of tho staff were dotached from headquarters ^ the remaining 18 from regional offices or projects• Following tho requests of tho Leaguo of Rod Cross locieties and the International Goriiraitteo of the Hod Gross ^ 3b health

•beams from 2k countries have served in tho Congo • As of 16 January^ 2Ц toaras from 17 countriGs were on duty and 10 teams from sevon countrica had loft the Congo. In addition thro G ^ovornniGnts (G-hana^ Israel and United Arab Ropublic) provided tho Government of tho Con^o .with health toaias ^ all of i-mich have sincc returnod t c t h o i r countries•

•time the Red Cross teams xclll be finishing their current period of service in the C o n g oj the Director-Genoral has arranged with the League of Red Gross Societies and the International Copnittee 01 the Red Cross for a further extension of of these toams 义 each consisting of two doctors,, until 30 June. •.

3 . TRAINING

3*1 Since, l a c k of trained Congolese- staff is one of the' m a i n problems confronting

t h e H e a l't h M i n i s t r y , a prograirmis' was worked, out for training as large a number of

such personnel as practicable-. -The fellows listed below aro now studying under fellowships to obtain the required training.

t h G U n i V e r s i t^ o f L o v a n i u m and in a g r o e m o n t w i t h tho G o v e r n m e n t of the C o n g o , W H O -is recruiting l k p r o f e s s o r s to complete tho toacïiing s t a f f o f tho F a c u l t y o f M a d i c i n c

o f t h e d i v e r s i t y o f L o v a n i m i a n d 七he Nursing S c h o o l . T h e costs o f 12 of t h e professors >rlll be reimbursed b y the U n i t e d N a t i o n s , a n d those of the o t h e r t w o will be m e t from the r e g u l a r b u d g e t o f the O r g a n i z a t i o n . O f the l U p r o f e s s o r s , t w o are in position,, one w i l l report for d u t y the first w e e k in- February; one w i l l

report mid-March and a n o t h e r is awaiting clearance b y the Govermient. o f tho C o n g o . Л n u m b e r of candidates are b e i n3 c o n s i d e r e d f o r the o t h e r nine p o s t s . W H O is also facilitating the admittanca of a l a r g e r n u m b e r o f Congolese m o d i c a l s t u d e n t s b y agreeing to subsidize t h e i r s c h o o l i n g . The s u b s i d y f o r this y s a r w i l l c o v e r a

possible 扛 students and w i l l e v e n t u a l l y bo r a i s e d t o cover UO - the пишЬег w h i c h i t is h o p e d to admit f o r the next y e a r .

Besides t h i s , W H O has d e v e l o p o d s e v e r a l schemes f o r the in-service t r a i n i n g o f l o c a l a u x i l i a r y s t a f f .
