ECA to host the Third Action for Global Information Sharing from 1 – 2 December.

Addis Ababa, 09 November 2011 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Localisation Research Center (LRC), and the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) are jointly organising the third Action for Global Information Sharing (AGIS) from 1 – 2 December in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Participants will include business men and women, technology experts, linguists, and policy-makers in the field of languages and technology from all over the world. The aim is to develop innovative solutions that will allow the world in general and Africa in particular to listen to its diverse voices in local languages.

The theme of AGIS 2011 is: Promoting Equality through Language and Cultural Diversity. Participants will address, inter alia,language and technology policy, language and business opportunities in Africa, human language technologies and language service delivery for development. This is the first time that AGIS will connect Africa’s language industry and policy- makers with the mainstream localisation and translation industry and researchers.

Following the highly successful AGIS 2009 in Limerick, Ireland and AGIS 2010 in New Delhi, India; AGIS 2011 will be hosted by the ICT and Science & Technology Division (ISTD) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Access to information and knowledge in any language is not just a fundamental human right; it is also a pre-requisite for development, inclusion and economic growth.
