Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Local Organising Committee and the German Society for
Clinical Nutrition (DGEM) we would like to invite you to the 35
thESPEN
Congress 2013 held for the second time in Leipzig. Some of you may have
already participated at the 10
thCongress in Leipzig in 1988. Since then Europe
has changed tremendously. 25 years on, we are grateful to have the
opportunity once again to host the ESPEN Congress in Leipzig and to share
with you this “wind of change”.
The city of Leipzig in the former GDR was the origin of the peaceful revolution
in 1989, which was the beginning of “Freiheit” (freedom) and the reunification
of Germany. This historical background creates the theme for the Congress:
““TTe

interesting, broad and open-minded programme, offering both updated and
cutting-edge science, as well as clinical practice.
As a Congress venue, Leipzig offers a lot: one of the most modern Congress
sites in Germany, a superb infrastructure, and all the charms of an adorable city
in which you can enjoy your leisure time.
The city of Leipzig has a rich heritage in both music and the performing arts.
Names like Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy are
inseparably linked to the city. The “Gewandhaus” Concert Hall is home to a
world-class Orchestra known for its excellence in classical music performances.
In addition, one of the oldest and most famous German Boys`Choirs, the
“Thomanerchor” of the St. Thomas Church, celebrated its 800
thanniversary in
2012. Its most famous choirmaster was from 1723 to 1750 none other than
Johann Sebastian Bach.
The people of Leipzig will be delighted to welcome participants from all over
the world, to share and exchange ideas, and to make their guests feel at home.
We hope to see you in Leipzig in 2013.
The Local Organising Committee
Arved Weimann, President of the ESPEN 2013 Congress
Stephan C. Bischoff, Chairperson Scientific Committee and President DGEM

Leipziger Messe – the Leipzig Fair – dates back 800 years and is regarded as the world's oldest commercial fair. The CCL is the core building: featuring 23 rooms, a large hall for 1,000 people, and spacious foyers and exhibition areas, the CCL is perfect for many different and creative meeting layouts. The city's new congress and exhibition centre was opened in April 1996. Its five exhibition halls and the Congress Center Leipzig are equipped with state-of-the-art communication technology.

Submission process
K Delegates, who would like to present their work at the Congress, either orally or as a poster, are invited to submit an abstract for consideration by the Abstract Grading Committee.
K A paper should not be submitted to the 35th ESPEN Congress if it has already been presented
internationally.
K Abstract submission is only possible via Internet: go to www.espen.orgon the Internet. Click on ‘’ABSTRACTS’’ and follow the instructions as given.
K Please read carefully all the instructions available on the Internet and on the on-line abstract submission system before preparing your abstract.
K The creation of a user account is required for the submission of an abstract. The account only needs to be created once and can be re-used for future abstract submission and registration to the conference. Submitters from last year’s meeting should use their existing account details. K Abstracts can be saved in “Draft status” to be re-edited and modified until the submission deadline
(4 April 2013, Midnight CET). Abstracts cannot be edited after the submission deadline. K Abstracts fulfilling all criteria can be saved in “Final submission” status. Only abstracts in “Final
submission” status will be considered for the Congress.
K Abstracts are accepted on a wide range of topics in clinical nutrition and metabolism. The submitter has to select the right topic for the abstract on the submission form. Available topics are:
– Nutritional assessment – Nutritional epidemiology
– Carbohydrate and lipid metabolism – Protein and amino acid metabolism – Hormones, mediators and immunity

Please refer to the word count of the system as slight differences may occur when counting with WORD or similar programmes.
The abstract needs to be structured as follows:
K Rationale: this section should contain 1-2 sentences that clearly indicate the scientific question of the study and its clinical (or other) importance.
K Methods: this section should contain sufficient information to be able to understand the experimental design, the analytical techniques and the statistics used in the study.
K Results: this section should contain objective data to answer the scientific question(s).
K Conclusions: this section should provide only conclusions of the study directly supported by the results, along with implications for clinical practice, avoiding speculation and overgeneralisation. One table can be included, but the total number of cells (columns + rows) may not exceed 16. Please note that tables may significantly reduce the number of the remaining allowed characters.
A paper cannot be accepted if the conflict of interest disclosure is not signed. On the on-line abstract form, provide the requested details for all authors.

ABOUT LEIPZIG
Leipzig is located in the East of Germany, in a low-lying area in the north-western part of Saxony by the rivers Elster, Pleisse and Parthe. Its average altitude above sea-level is 118 m. Leipzig currently has about 500,000 inhabitants.
The city covers an area of 297.6 km2
and enjoys a generally relatively mild climate.
Leipzig is a traditional focus of traffic infrastructure. Having grown as a trade-fair and com-mercial centre at the crossroads of two military and comcom-mercial routes, today more than ever the city focuses traffic routes from all directions. So there are numerous ways of getting to Leipzig, including the Leipzig/Halle airport. Its schedule includes direct flights from/to big European cities such as London, Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan or Vienna as well as some long distances destinations.
Visitors who come to Leipzig for a conference will hopefully be able to spend some leisurely hours and dive into the charms and attractions of the host city: the unique flair, the whole variety of things to do and to see: from the concert in the Gewandhaus Concert Hall to a relaxed pub crawl in the evening. Visitors should not miss the architectural gems of Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau, the openness and hospitality of Leipzig people. There are only few cities which have such a rich musical tradition as Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach was the choirmaster of St. Thomas Church from 1723 to 1750. The house where Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy died can be visited in Leipzig. The story of Robert and Clara Schumann is inseparably linked with Leipzig, and Richard Wagner was born in the city in 1813. Don’t miss such an opportunity to discover this brilliant city at the same time as the rich scientific and educational programmes of the Congress.
Climate and Clothing
The mean temperature in Leipzig in August/September is around 18 degrees Celsius.

Emergency numbers
For all emergencies, please dial 112.
Language
German is the national language of Germany. The official congress language will be English.
Public transportation
Public transport in Leipzig is characterized by a dense light-rail system. 13 tram lines serve a transport area of about 152 kilometres, complemented by more than 30 bus lines in large part being en-route in the suburban area. The operating company of tram and bus lines is called "Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe" (LVB). The current public transport tariff of „Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund“ (MDV) is valid not only within the city of Leipzig, but also throughout Central Germany. Only one ticket for tram and bus, that means only one common tariff for all trams, buses, suburban trains, regional express trains, regional trains and also hailed scheduled taxis. The bus is certainly a slower transportation but it allows you to enjoy the city views while moving around.
Safety
Leipzig is a safe place but you should take normal, sensible precautions to avoid mugging, bag snatching and pick pocketing. You should be extra vigilant at airports and railway stations. Do not leave valuables unattended. Most shops and all major taxi companies accept credit and debit cards, so there is no need to carry a lot of cash.
