-After consultation with the persons at NR.C whose work would be most affected by the bl sting, it was found

acceptable to use charges uch that nowhere would velocities

be higher than those produced by a single 4-lb char e in test

area A. This dictates the charge to

i

lb per delay (0.65 lb

single) in th vicinity of test area C. Using this restdction

as a criterion, the proposed charge zone are shown in

Figure 1. The charges shown are for delayed blasting

where an economic number of blasts can be fired

simul-taneously. For single bla t the weights shown can be

increased by a third. Although the proposed charge in

the vicinity of test area C is comparativ ly small, it is

deemed adequate as the rock elevation there is 175 ft.

the same as the basement floor elevation. Consequently,

the maximum depth of rock blasting would be of the order

of 3 ft. The rock in this area was found to contain

horizontal seams which makes it easily removable, even manually.

It should be no ed that the velocity levels pr opos ed

will cause interruption of the 8 nsitive work at NRC. but

will ensure that no permanent damage is caused to the

instrument. The res archers whose experiments will be

most affected by the blasting xpressed their desire that

blasting be carried out between midnight and 10:00 a. m.

This i a stringent requirement; it is suggested. however,

that the bl sting be re tricted to either the beginning or the end of the working day (e. g. before 10:00 a. m. or

after 4 p. m., but not both). In addition. it will be necessary

that the blasting contractor ke p the contact man at NRC

well inform d of his plan beforeh nd.

To ensur e that the vibration levels dur ing the actual excav tion do not exceed the limits decided upon. the blasting will be monitor ed either by the National

R.esearch Council or by th Dep rtment of Public Works.
