0. - Introduction.
In a fundamental work
[29]
Serrin obtained verygeneral
conditionsunder which the Dirichlet
problem
for aquasilinear elliptic equation
witharbitrary
smoothboundary
values is solvable in agiven domain;
he alsoshowed that these conditions were
sharp
in that theproblem
is not solvablefor some
(infinitely differentiable) boundary
values whenthey
are violated.Prior to
[29],
existence of solutions foruniformly elliptic equations
hadbeen shown
by Ladyzhenskaya
and ITral’tseva[18]
and foruniformly
convex domains
by Gilbarg [6].
A naturalquestion
to askis,
what sortof existence
theory
can be established for the firstinitial-boundary
valueproblem
forquasilinear parabolic equations:
Foruniformly parabolic equations
thisquestion
was answeredby Ladyzhenskaya
and Ural’tseva[19]
at the same time as their work on
elliptic problems,
andfollowing
Serrin’swork came several
investigations
onnonuniformly parabolic problems: [2], [12], [33]. Unfortunately
all of these works fall short of thecomprehensive-
ness of
[29].
Edmunds and Peletier[2]
consider aslight generalization
ofthe
uniformly parabolic
case while Ivanov[12]
considers aparabolic
versionof
Gilbarg’s uniformly
convexproblems;
in both cases we shall see thattheir results are not best
possible
even within the restrictedsettings.
Tru-dinger [33]
fares better in that he provessolvability
under conditionsessentially
asgeneral
asSerrinis,
but he does not examine thesharpness
of his conditions.
(We
also mention the work of Iannelli andVergara
Caf-farelli
[11], Lichnewsky
and Temam[20],
and Marcellini and Miller[28]
onthe
time-dependent prescribed
mean curvatureequation.

the solutions in[20]

[28]
do notgenerally
assume theirboundary
values even in a weaksense, so their results are not
strictly comparable
to ours. Moreoverthey only
consider timeindependent boundary values.)
The purpose of this paper is to
present sharp parabolic analogs
of Serrin’sexistence and non-existence results. As we shall see, the
elliptic
methodscarry over to the
parabolic setting
withonly
minorchanges.
This fact isapparent
in[33]
but not in[2]
or[12],
so we shallrepeat
many of the details.Moreover we consider somewhat less smooth initial and
boundary
values(corresponding
to theregularity
ofboundary
values forelliptic problems
in
[21])
than would be used in a strictanalog
of Serrin’stheory.
Of course the
key
to our existencetheory
is the establishment of certaina
priori estimates,
and most of our effort is to prove such estimates. Afterwe
present
some basic results in Section1,
we discuss the crucialestimate,
on the
spatial gradient
of the solution on the lateralboundary,
in Section 2.Related to this
boundary gradient
estimate are some oscillation estimates whichimply
non-existence of solutions for certaininitial-boundary data;
these estimates and non-existence results appear in Section 3. Estimates
(other
than theboundary gradient estimate)
needed for the existence program aregiven
in Section 4. These estimates have allappeared
before(in [2], [12], [16], [19], [22], [30], [32])
so we shallgive
all but one in sim-plified form;
theexception
is a Holder estimate of thegradient
near theboundary.
For our purposes the version of this estimate due toLady- zhenskaya
and Ural’tseva[19] by
itself isinadequate
so we use also someresults of
Krylov [16] adapted
to the less smooth initial andboundary
valueswe are
considering.
A somewhat differentapproach
appears in[17]. Finally
some existence
theorems, extending
those in[2], [12]
and[33],

in Section 5.
