ECA will push for a harmonized energy platform in Central Africa - Janneh

ECA Press Release No. 20/2012

Brazzaville, 01 March 2012 (ECA) – UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of ECA, Mr. Abdoulie Janneh has called upon a host of Congolese ministers and experts from across Central Africa to count on ECA’s unwavering technical support in the development of the sub region’s huge energy potential to meet the needs of their countries, in particular, and of Africa as a whole. Mr Janneh’s remarks came as he jointly opened the 28th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) in Central Africa with Congo’s Minister of State, Coordinator of the Economic Pool and Minister of Economy, Planning, Regional Development and Integration – Mr. Pierre Moussa. The ICE is the policy organ of each sub-regional office of ECA.

Besides his call on the meeting to explore a sub-regional approach to tackling Central Africa’s Energy Challenges, in accordance with the theme of the ICE, Mr. Janneh appealed for a massive participation of the sub-region at the 5th joint AU Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and ECA African Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development billed for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 22 to 27 March 2012 under the theme: “Unleashing Africa’s Potential as a Pole of Global Growth”. In this regard, he asserted that “it is time, more than ever before, for Central African States to take cognizance of the invaluable assets represented by their vast mineral, forest and agricultural resources and adopt a joint approach in the exploitation of these resources in order to accelerate their development and strengthen the role of the sub- region as a pole of global growth.”

Meanwhile Congo’s Minister of State, Coordinator of the Economic Pool and Minister of Economy, Planning, Regional Development and Integration – Mr. Pierre Moussa saluted ECA’s role in Central Africa’s development agenda and said the sub- region needed to move beyond mere intent and consolidate its expansion of energy resources to be able to play a new dynamic role in the concert of emerging nations. He called on the experts of the ICE to carefully examine the reports under consideration at the meeting with a view to recommending new courses of action to enable countries of the sub-region to individually and collectively develop these resources.

Over 60 experts from across Central Africa are participating at the 28th session of the sub-region’s ICE, on the heels of a highly successful Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting (AEGM) on “Public service delivery, corruption and SME’s growth in Central Africa” jointly organized by the Central Africa Sub Regional Office of ECA and the Republic of Congo from 27 to 28 February 2012.
